FA TROPHY MATCH OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY THREE GOALS TO ONE For the second time this season Otago stalled off a challenge for the F.A. Trophy, which it has held since 1931, defeating a strong Canterbury side at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday by 3 goals to 1. There was an attendance of between 3000 and 4000 spectators, who were treated to a hard and fast game, which, however, was not as exciting as the first challenge game against Wellington. The playing area was on the heavy side. The visitors displayed fine ball control and -positional play, but lacked the necessary finish to round off the attacks. Except for a period of the play in the first half Otago had the game well in hand, and the facility with which it changed defence into attack was always dangerous. Mitchell, Canterbury’s goalie, gave n fine display up to the time of his enforced retirement, whilst Cawtheray, right full-back, A. Sutherland, chntre-half, and D. Sutherland, inside-right, were also outstanding. Otago did not display its best form until the second spell, Perry, at centre-half, being weak tlyoughotit, but M'Dougall, Cope, and Duncan were sound on defence, whilst Hooper’s characteristic dash again proved profitable to Otago, since he scored t"\\K> of the goals. M'Cormack and Skinner also played well for the defenders of the trophy, who deserved to win on the play. Auckland is expected to challenge next for the trophy. In the Canterbury team Trotter, inside-left, was unable to make the trip, his place being filled by J. Bruce. The teams' were as follows: Canterbury (Red and Black). B. Mitchell. S. Cawtheray, G. Sutherland, R. Henderson. A. Sutherland, A. Walker (captain), J. Clements, D. Sutherland. H. Goddard, J. Bruce, D. Walker. Otago (Dark Blue).—J. M'Dougall, L. Coats (captain), H. Cope, S. Duncan, A. Perry, J. Baillie. A. Gorrie, J. Witchall. W. Hooper, T. M'Cormack, C. Skinner. THE FIRST SPELL Otago won the toss, and played from the . harbour end. Canterbury came through from the kick-off, Baillie mmkieking. Coats and Cope eventually cleared, and Perry sent up to Skinner on the left. Hooper misjudged the cross, and D. Sutherland sent play back. Poor placing by the Otago halves let A. Sutherland open up play to the Canterbury forwards, D. Walker shooting across goal for a goal kick. Skinner, the Otago left, receiving from Perry, crossed a good ball to Gorrie. the latter just sending past. Otago kept up the attack, and following nice play bv M'Cormack, Cawtheray cleared the movement, but Perry returned play to the visitors’ goal, and Hoopers header went behind. From the goal kick. Henderson, the two Walkers, and Goddard , came a wav in neat passing play, when Coats made a timely clearance, hrom midfield plav, Duncan opened an attack, M'Cormrfck passing back to Perry, who drove to goal, wfiere Mitchell* fielding well was forced to concede a corner, which was resultless. Accurate passing and positional play by the visitors’ halves . ami forwards had Otago’s_ defence in trouble. Goddard finished off with a good shot, which M'Dougall held, and off-side plav brought relief. The following play was keenly contested, Canterbury playing a good class of football, whilst Otago were passing poorly. Mitchell cleared a long drive from Witchall, and M Dougall • safely fielded a fine shot from Goddard. A dash by the Otago centre was stopped bv A. Sutherland, who sent up to DSutherland, the latter shooting in a fast, low shot, which was well saved by M Dougall. M'Dougall cleared a further shot ) from Bruce, and from a free kick Duncan sent play upfield. M'Cormack tricked A. Sutherland to send in a fine drive, which Mitchell conceded a corner to save. 4 "oal kick resulting; Perry received, and" placed to Witchall, who headed. to Gorrie. and the wingers’ high shot just skimmed the bar. From a throw-in D. -Walker cleverly beat Coats, and centred. Goddard connected with the ball, and M‘Bengali's judgment in coming out relieved the danger, with the Canterbury forwards' in close attendance. D. Sutherland placed 'behind from a further attack tad the Otago forwards, with Hooper and Witchall prominent, broke away, Cawtheray, who was defending well for the visitors, cleared the wingers cross. Still forcing play Otago missed scoring from a corner, and following a free kick to Canterbury Gorrie sent in a tong cross to goal. Mitchell fisted the hall out, and Hooper returned with a header, Cawtheray conceding a resultless corner to clear. Canterbury a combitia* tion, with A. Sutherland opening up the play, was troubling Otago’s defence, and Clements and D. Sutherland went through on the right. Duncan, who was the most consistent of the Otago rearv guard. ’Telieved the position, but ASutherland secured and tested M Dougal • without success. G. Sutherland blocked Gorrie on Otago’s right, and from a throw-in Skinner received and sent up to Hooper. A low drive from the latter : forcid Mitchell to spread out and concede a corner to save a goal. Hooper s header from the cross was sent behind. A. Sutherland, the visitors centre-halt, was always dangerous in opening up the play to his forwards, and Duncan ana Cope were prominent in stemming several movements, whilst M'Dougall, xi goal, saved a great shot from Clements. Cant< rbury’s shooting was not strong, the inside forwards, with the exception of D. Sutherland, lacking dash in front of goal. Hooper spoilt a break away by Otago through handling, and again Canterbury s attack was superior to Otago s defence, Henderson and Clements making fine play on the left Cope eventually cleared strongly and by long passing Skinner raced away on the left, a fine ■ cross being headed out by G. Sutherland. Gorrie’s return to goal was fisted 'out' by Mitchell, and M'Cormack failed to connect with Witch, all’s header, the ball going over. Otago were now Vlaying* better, the goal kick bringing short relief to the visitors, whose "oalie twice made good saves from smart headers bv Witchall and Hooper. Although Canterbury had a big pull at centre-half. Otago’s dash kept their opponents penned. Skinner slipped across a fine ball to M'Cormack. who transferred to Hooper, the latter being pulled up for offside. Shortly after Skinner skimmed the bar ■with it long drive. Cawtheray and A. Walker were displaying solid defence, and the two Sutherlands and Goddard came away in a neat passing movement which was held up for offside. Half time was .called with Otago on attack, a hard spell ending without a score from either side. THE SECOND SPELL With the resumption of pla\\ Henderson cut off an Otago attack, the latter’s halves tailing to stop the visitors’ combined movement, and a corner resulted. Duncan cleared- the kick, and sent Witchall and Gorrie away. The ball travelled to Hooper and then to Skinner. The winger’s shot was miskicked by Cnwtheray and Hooper dashing in gave Mitchell no chance. Otago 1 goal. Canterbury .. ~ .. Nil. Duncan returned a left.-wing advance by the visitors, and, following a series of throw-ins in Canterbury’s area, Coats sent in a long’ drive, Mitchell saving brilliantly. Weak play by Perry nullified further attacks by Otago, and a clearance going to D. Sutherland, the insideright cleverly beat the Otago defence, and.M'Dougall had a hard drive to clear. Still pressing, Clements centred nicely

for the visitors to Goddard, the latter transferring to D. Walker, who beat Coats but was blocked by Duncan, and a free kick brought relief to the defenders. Canterbury were not playing as well as in the first spell, but Cawtheray was sound on defence. Cope returned an attack on the right, and Witchall, receiving, passed to Hooper, the centre coming through with the ball. Mitchell took a risk by coming out and stopped the shot. Hooper received from the rebound, and the goalie deflected the ball outside for a corner. Skinner’s kick went behind. Henderson sent play well down on the right, D. Sutherland testing M'Dougall with a fast, low shot. The goalie saved well and a free kick brought relief to Otago. Otago’s halves failed to carry play through, and the opposing forwards took up the attack, D, Walker shooting past. A further advance was repelled by Duncan sending up to M'Cormack, offside by Hooper nullifying the movement. Coats conceded a resultless corner, and Otago, by long passing, transferred, play to Canterbury’s end, Mitchell clearing a shot from Gorrie. From a throw-in in the visitors’ area, Hooper placed nicely to Gorrie. The winger crossed a good ball, which M'Cormack slammed into the net with a well-taken header, Otago .. 2 goals. Canterbury Nil. Otago were now playing with more confidence, but sound play by 6. Sutherland at back sent Canterbury away, Clements, Goddard, and D. Sutherland being prominent in a fine piece of play, when a parting shot by Bruce was blocked by Duncan.' Good play on Otago’s left saw Baillie send on to Skinner. Cawtheray tdeared well, but Perry placed through the centre to Hooper, who transferred to M'Cormack, the latter missing with a good effort; Play went to Otago’s end, and from , a throw-in D. Sutherland cleverly worked into position, sending a high shot to goal. M'Dougall fisted out, but Sutherland again secured and drove hard to goal, when the goalie’s efforts to turn the ball outside deflected it into the net. Otago .. .. 2 goals. Canterbury .. 1 goal. Canterbury displayed good defence w holding up attacks by Otago which followed. and the ball coming out to Duncan, the latter passed back to Coats, who .sent a long pass to Skinner on the left. M'Cormack connected with the wingers pass, and Mitchell got down to stop a hot drive. The ball rebounded off the goalie, however, and Hooper banged it into the net. Otago 3 goals. Canterbury 1 goal. . , In the collision with Hooper, Mitchell the goalie, was injured, and had to go off, D. Walker taking his place in the goal. Playing with four forwards, Canterbury still troubled the holders, and when Baillie and Cope were beaten by Clements, Coats made a timely clearance. Skinner made good play from a pass by M'Cormack, and shooting strongly to goal, Walker came out to clear. Coats stopped Bruce, who received a nice opening following good play by D. Sutherland, and sending up the right wing, WitchaU and Gorrie were prominent, the ball going to Skinner, whose weak shot Walker saved. The Otago backs were now playing better. The forwards’ shooting, however, was weak, Witchall and Skinner both placing past.. Canterbury were holding their own with only 10 men, and Goddard was almost through from a pass by Bruce when Cope relieved. Otago s left came through again, M'Cormack sending out a nice pass to Skinner, whose' shot was saved by Walker, and Witchall placed over from the clearance. Witn time nearly up the play slowed down considerably. Canterbury continued to y show good combination, but the efforts to score by Clemente, D. Sutherland, and Bruce were frustrated by the backs. M'Dougall fielded safely a long shot from Henderson, and in the last minute of the play Duncan sent Gorrie, Witchall, and Hooper away, the inside-right finishing off the movement by kicking over. The final result was: Otago : ? goals. Canterbury ........ 1 goal. Mr A. Bowie was the referee. At the conclusion of the game Mr K. S. Black, patron of the Otago Football Association, presented the trophy to the captain of the Otago team. The injured player, M. B. Mitchell, who was taken to Hospital on Saturday suffering from concussion, was discharged yesterday fully recovered, and returned with the by. the midnight express last night. OTAGO JUNIORS v. SOUTHLAND A curtain-raiser was played between a Southland representative side and an Otago junior representative eleven. In the first spell Otago did most of the attacking, and Pay, the Southland goalkeeper, was called on to clear some hard shots. The Southland players showed a disinclination to tackle the Otago men, who were faster and' smarter than their opponents. Alcorn and Fraser found the net for Otago fairly early in the game, and after a long spell, during which Otago did most of the attacking, Peart -headed the ball past Pay, and the spell ended: Otago 3, Southland nil. Southland strengthened their inside division by placing Maxwell and M'Murdo inside in place of Kerr and Adamson respectively, but Otago continued to do most of the attacking, and their superior combination prevailed. Peart goaled twice, and Pay knocked the ball through his own goal, the score at the final whistle being: Otago .. y 6 goals. Southland Nil. Mr P. Latimer was the referee. THIRD GRADE.
