The earliest plan of London is “ Wyngaerde’s Panorama of London, Westminister, and Southwark in 1543.” It displays the entire length of the City Wall, and shows many scattered villages in the open country, embraced within the London of the present day. It shows along the Strand a number of the great mansions belonging to peers and prelates. “Aga's Map” (15G0-1570) is rather more of a street plan, and shows the north side of the Strand with houses stretching from the Fleet River to Charing Cross; dwellings run along the river’s bank on the Southwark side. “ Rocque’s Map ” (17411745) sets out the regions now within the suburbs of London.
