NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

SEVERE FROSTS. Severe frosts have been experienced in North-East Harbour during the past few days. It was unusual to see such heavy frosts so close to the edge of the water. The frosts will be beneficial to ground which has been broken up for cultivation. UNEMPLOYMENT. ' The plight of the unemployed in the North-East Harbour district is still a matter of great concern. Unavailing efforts have been made to have the standdown week abolished. A committee was appointed some time ago to take steps to obtain funds to assist the unemployed, and several successful entertainments have been held at Macandrew Bay. Between 40 and 50 men are unemployed in the district. SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM. Considerable interest is being by parents and scholars in the North-East Harbour School Rugby football team. Up to the present time the team has suffered only one defeat. For beginners in the Rugby code, the boys have made a very creditable showing, the result, to a great extent, of the coaching of the headmaster Mr A. W. Alloo). The boys’ performances are all the more creditable owing to the fact that there are no playing facilities at Macandrew Bay. MACANDREW BAY FLOWER SHOW. At a recent meeting of the Macandrew Bay Flower Show Committee the schedule for the show to be held in September was finally decided on. These shows have become very popular with the residents, and it is anticipated that the next will be even more attractive than all previous shqavs. A meeting will be held at an early'date, when all interested in the welfare of the show and horticulture will be invited to attend. WORK OF UNEMPLOYED. During the past few months the unemployed have been engaged on useful work in many parts of the district. A number of men have been employed cleaning the street channels. The bank above the Beach road near Mr Bewley’s premises has been cleared of brush, a footpath formed, and a rustic fence erected. These improvements give this portion of Macandrew Bay a much more pleasing appearance. Tlie recreation ground at the rear of the Public Hall has been practically filled in, but the completion of this improvement work has been suspended owing to the lack of funds. The NorthEast Harbour Ratepayers’ Association, however, is making an effort to obtain sufficient money to complete the work, and there is every indication that this will be accomplished in the near future, thus making this part of Macandrew Bay an attractive children’s playing area. MACANDREW BAY GOLF CLUB. The following is the draw for the second round of the Macandrew Bay Golf Club Championship to bn played to-day:— Seniors. —Alloo v. C. Deuker, Paterson v. Churchill. v Juniors. —Blom field v. M’Phcrson, Stewart v. Wynn. The following is the draw for a Stroke Competition, commencing at 2,30 p.m.— J. B. Deakcr v. Grigg, Swinton v. Booth, Greenwood v.
