ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT
The Dunedin Orchestral Society’s second concert of the season will be hold in His Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday. July 1, when a popular and interesting programme will be presented. The principal orchestral offering will be the tuneful “ Clock " symphony by Haydn. This composer’s music is always popular, and this is a particularly melodious number. Two splendid overtures have been selected, Mozart’s “II Seraglio,” being vivacious, with effective movements for the strings, while “ Son and Stranger,” by Mendelssohn, has some stirring moments. The popular “ Les Huguenots ” selection will suit the brass sections of the orchestra, and some smaller and lighter numbers, including the beautiful “ Valse Lyrique,” by Sibelius (a first performance by the society) will add variety. The soloists are Miss Dorothy Mackay, Miss Ruth Sell, and Mr E. Ottrey, and Miss Mackay and Mr Alfred Walmsley will sing the duet from “ Carmen,” “ Speak to Me of My Mother.”
