TROTTING

By Sentinel.

, Sir Gowan's work out at Addington •prior to the Sapling Stakes in 3miu 23sec will win him support for hie engagement at Ashburton. Agile experienced a bad run in his race at the Ashburton Trot-ting Club's meeting, but in a smaller field to-day may obtain a better chance of proving his worth. The American mare Nell Volo registered her seventh win this sea'son when she led the field, home in the Stewards' Handicap at Epsom.. She is a higji-class mare, and promises to go on-winning for some time yet. . The field of eight for the Winehmore Trot Handicap at Ashburton is the smallest paid up for at an Ashburton Racing Club's meeting for a long time. It is probable (says " Ribbonwood") that Summit has frightened out several of the iion-acceptors, and. on'New Brighton form, she certainly appears to hold the key to the situation. Although she beat Compass by only half a length at New Brighton, Summit was actually toying With him at the end, and she is evidently a particularly good sort. ...■'"'. J. Bryce has a good record in his association with the Auckland pacer, Kewpie's Triumph, winner of the Adams Memorial Cup at the Auckland meeting. Kewpie's Triumph has won three of the Inst four races he has contested and was

third at his second start on Wednesday. On all occasions he was driven by J. Bryce. Kewpie’s Triumph is a five-year-old stallion by The Trlymph from Kewpie, who was by Petereta from Matariki, by Bellman from Georgina, and he is a halfbrother to Kewpie’s Guy. The Addington trainer, W. J. Tomkinson, wil, leave on Monday on a short holiday trip to Australia. .He expects to be back in about three weeks from the date of his departure. During his stay in Melbourne he intends to inspect the draft of horses being submitted to auction on July 18 by Mr W. Balloch. Among those to be offered is advertised a colt by Globe Derby from Belle Logan, foaled in 1930, Belle Logan is the dam of Dillon Logan and Pendant, the latter a place earner in the last Melbourne Derby and a winner a few weeks' later. The doings of the rising two-year-old trotter by Native King from Onyx in J. J. Kennerley’s stable, will be ivatched with great interest by Addington attendants. Native King himself was a firstclass trotter, winning a Dominion Handicap, but Onyx had a far more illustrious career. She was truly great, one of the gamest and most genuine mares ever raced in New Zealand, and she still holds the mile and a-half grass track record of 3.13 against time. It was a thousand pitties (says “ Ribbonwood ”) that her connections attempted to make a comeback with Onyx when she was past the age when improvement could have been expected. Only two or her foals are living, the other being Baron Chenault. Gracie M’Elwyn is tbe name claimed for the Jack Potts —Jean M’Ehvyn yearling filly, which is entered for next year’s Sapling Stakes. It is safe to say that there is not a better-bred pacer in New Zealand than this one, who, according to an exchange, looks every inch an _ aristocrat, and already shows natural pacing ability. Jack Potts is one of the very few pure pacing-bred horses in New Zealand, his pedigree being full of Direct and Hal blood, while Jean M’Ehvyn was a daughter of Nelson Bingen, for several seasons the leading sire, and Miss Spiers, by Peter the Great from Widow Lola by Onward (son of George Wilkes) from The Widow, by Wilton—Maggie H. Miss Spiers is almost a sister in blood to Widow Maggie, dam of Mr M’Ehvyn, a champion four times in America, and now one of the leading sires. Gracie M’Ehvyn is pointed to with pride at R. B. Berry’s stable, and there is no mistaking that she is a blue-blood.
