TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY meeting The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was held yesterday, Cr T. Carruthers presiding. Crs J. W. Blair, F. G. Brinsdon, J, Gow, C. Findlay, R. A. Kempshell, G. Stevenson, and W. Kirk were present. REPORTS. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past month had been £I7OO 16s 9d and recommended the payment of accounts totalling £2354 18s lid. The bank book showed a credit balance of £875 3s 6d. The committee further reported that the bank had approved of a continuation of an overdraft limit for the current year.—Adopted. Mr John Garrett (inspector of works) reported for the month as follows; East Taieri Riding; One hundred and three yards of maintenance gravel had been run out from the Mill Creek dump at Kirkland’s, on to the Riverside roads. Also 32 yards of maintenance gravel had been spread on Clyde street, Mosgiel Junction, from the Riverside dump. Gladstone, Cemetery, and Riccarton roads had been graded with the power grader. Watertables had been cleaned out on Gibson’s to Muir’s road. North Taieri Riding; One, hundred and sixty-five yards of maintenance gravel from Milner’s pit had been run out on the following roads: Wingatni, Gladstone, and Henderson street Wingatni Hill and Halfway Bush to Whare Flat roads have been surfaced. The Whare Flat road had been graded with the power grader. Eighty-seven yards of gravel from the Silverside dump had been run out on Ruthven’s and Centre roads. Kaikorai Riding: Maintenance metal had been run out on Freeman’s road from the Green Island Borough boundary to the new coal mine. He recommended that a new 24ft Sin pipe culvert be put in on this road, near the coal mine. Kaikorai Valley and Green Island Bush roads had been surfaced. Otokia Riding: One hundred and twenty yards of maintenance gravel from the Brighton gravel pit had been run out on Brighton streets. M'Coll’s and Seaview roads. The running out of the gravel on the Bigstone road at Gibb’s property was in progress. This work had been carried out by the men under the No. 5 scheme. M'Laren’s Gully and Saddle Hill roads had been surfaced. A broken stone culvert on the old Brighton road was being replaced with 18in concrete pipes. Outram Riding: Two hundred and fifty yards of maintenance gravel from Brenssell’s, pit had been run out on Huntly and Cray roads. Loan, Allanton, to Berwick, D. Millar’s and Kirk’s . Drain roads had been surfaced. Outram to Allanton, Allanton to Berwick and Loan roads had been graded with the power grader. Maungatua Riding: The following roads had been surfaced; —Woodside to Lee Creek, Spark’s, Otokia-Maungatua, Riverbank, and B. Drain. Deep Stream Riding: The following roads had been surfaced: —Lamb Hill, Mount Allan, Hindon Railway, Hindon. to Lee and .Young’s. Strath-Taieri Riding: The following roads had been graded with the power grader:—

Brown’s, Top road to Cotterill’s, Gladbrook Settlement, and Sutton to Wade’s. A culvert on Top road had been lifted and rebuilt: three pipe culverts had been put in on Copway street, Middlemarch. Water tables had been cleaned out on Gladbrook settlement and Middlemarch to Rock and Pillar roads. Highways.—No. 2: The section from Mosgiel to West Taieri Church, had been graded with the power grader. Water tables had been cleaned out on the section from West Taieri Church to Whare Creek. Gravel had been graded on the road from' Lee Stream to Clark’s, also from the Shannon to Middlemarch. No, 3; The Duke’s road section had been graded with the power grader, and the hill section had been surfaced. No. 4: Water tables and culverts had been cleaned out on this section. No. 5: ‘Three hundred yards of maintenance gravel had been run out on the section from Kaikorai Stream to Brighton; the section had also been graded with the.power grader. No. 6: The section from Smoothcone to Middlemarch had been graded with the power grader. The report'was adopted. The following recommendations by the inspector were agreed to:—East Taieri Riding: That 72ft of 24in pipe be put across Centre road opposite the Meadowbank property. Outrhm Riding: That 100 yards of gravel be run out on Bissett's road. The ranger reported having visited the ridings during the month and had found wandering 20 head of cattle—Received. The traffic, building, and sanitary inspector (Mr John Williamson) reported as follows: —Six hundred and seven renewals and 20 new drivers’ licenses had been issued to date. Nineteen heavy traffic licenses had also been issued during the month. Three building permits had been granted. All the slaughter houses in the county had been inspected. The piggeries at Green Island Bush were in an unsatisfactory condition. —The report was received, and the inspector instructed to interview the owner of the piggeries with a view to having the drainage properly attended to. CORRESPONDENCE. Treasury vouchers were received as follows:—Highways, £153 16s-4d; fees, fines, etc., £2 7s 6d.—Received. The Under-secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, forwarded a copy of an Order-iu-Council altering the boundaries of the Borough of Green Island.— Received. The Commissioner of Unemployment wrote in connection with tree-planting by local bodies. Supplies could be obtained from the State Forest Service. —Received and noted. A memorandum was received regarding the election of a local body representative on the King Edward Technical College Board. —The chairman and Or Findlay were appointed to represent the council. The town clerk, Outram, asked that a few loads of gravel bo spread on the recently formed parking place opposite the West Taieri Church.—Granted; half of the cost to be borne by Maungatua and Outram Ridings. R. Kidd, Sutton,' asked that some attention be given to the road between his property and Sutton siding.—To be attended to. A letter was read from the Otago High Schools Board regarding the clearing of

Clarks Creek across county roads.—The chairman reported that the matter had been dealt with. r N. M'Coll (Brighton) drew the council’s attention • to the bad position of the pipe culvert on the Creamery road, near his property.—Left to the member for the Tiding and-the inspector, with power, to act. ' ) ; ■ Messrs Thornley and Craigie, Brighton, asked the council to improve AJ'lntoslFs road, Brighton, which was almost impassable in places.—Letters were also received from Mr W, Thom and Airs H. Thom on the same matter.—lt was decided to reply that no money was available for that work. Mrs E. Callander, Quarry road, Mosgiel, asked the council to metal the road to her property at Saddle Hill.—lt was decided to reply that' no money was available. D. Donaldson, East' Taieri, asked that steps be taken to improve the approach to the railway side of the Otbkia bridge.— Left to the inspector with power to act. • GENERAL. A report was tabled regarding an interview with the town clerk, Dunedin, regarding Riselaw road.—Held over in the meantime. The Silverstreara improvement rate was fixed at the same amount as last year. The clerk reported that all matters in connection with the deviation of road at Deep Stream had ■ been agreed to. Messrs Hunter and Burton were granted a renewal of lease for two years for the scooping of gravel at the county pit in that locality. The matter of collecting payments for gravel was discussed, and it was decided that payment be made at the pit. The chairman moved the following motion, notice of which was standing in hia name: —“That Brown’s road and Top road, from Brown’s corner to S.G. run COO, and thence down to the'highway at Sutton School, be made a schedule road.” —After discussion, in which some of the members of the council opposed the motion, the chairman withdrew it on the understanding that application would be made to the Defence Department for a yearly grant to repair the road which the department bad used during the camp periods. The matter of the general. rate for 1933-1934 was discussed. —It was resolved to give notice to levy a rate as follows: Outram and Alaungatua Id in the £,' and. the remainder of the ridings IJd in the £.
