TO-DAY’S FOOTBALL

ASSOCIATION . CANTERBURY v. OTAGO, At the Caledonian Ground this afternoon Otago will be called upon to resist ; a challenge from the Canterbury representatives for the English Footbajl Association’s trophy, which it has held since the 1931 season. The fine, attractive, and exciting game played between Wellington and Otago teams a fortnight back will be fresh in the minds of spectators who witnessed the play, and the public can depend that to-day’s match will be fully as interesting. The players from Canterbury are a very strong side/ many of whom are well known to supporters of the game ' and have worthily represented their province in the past. Although defeated in last year’s game at Dunedin, the visitors showed how the round-ball game should be played, and they are likely fully to extend the local holders of the trophy. The team which represented Otago in. the Wellington - match has been slightly altered, but the changes should make for a better all-round combination. A curtain-raiser between a Southland representative side and an Otago junior eleven will be played, commencing at 1 o’clock. The members of the Canterbury party, with Mr J. Robb as manager, arrived last night, and are staying at the RugbyHotel. The teams are as follows: Canterbury.—Goal, M. B. Mitchell; fullbacks—S. Cawtheray, G. Sutherland; halves —R. Henderson, A. Sutherland, ~A. Walker; forwards —J. Clements, D, Sutherland, H. Goddard, A. Bruce, D. G. Walker. Otago. —Goal, J. M'Dougall; full-backs —L. Coats, H. Cope; halves—S. Duncan, A. Perry, J. Baillie; forwards—A. Gorrie, J. Witehall, W. Hooper, T. M'Comack, C. Skinner. | RUGBY. ' , The first round of the senior Rugby matches will be brought to a conclusion this afternoon. The chief attraction will be the match between University A and Pirates, which will be played at Carisbrook. The University side has shown brilliant form during the season. It possesses a strong forward division which gives the clever backs plenty of chances. Pirates have not played up to expectations of late, but they arc a team which plays attractive football. The forwards have been strengthened for this match and alteration has also been made in the’ back division. Since Pirates usually play at their best against University, the standard of play should not be below the expectations of the spectators. As a curtain-raiser the Fourth Grade match between Christian Brothers and Dunedin will be played. At Bishopscourt Kaikorai and Zingari will play, and Taieri will meet Dunedin at Tahuna. Park. The match between Alhambra and University B will be played on the University Oval, and Southern will meet Union on the main ground at Logan Park. The unemployed will be admitted as usual at the special turnstile in Burns street. RUGBY LEAGUE. The Otago Rugby League games will be played this afternoon on the Oval and Chisholm Park. A fast game should be witnessed at the Oval, where Christian Brothers will meet Pacific. Both teams are in good form, and both play an open game. City will meet Athletic on Chisholm Park. These teams have showed marked improvement during the past few weeks.
