CHEAP BREAD

CONCESSION TO RELIEF WORKERS SCHEME FORMULATED BY BAKERS. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 23. A proposal to provide relief workers with bread at 4|d a loaf during the winter months is being discussed by the executive of the Auckland Master Bakers’ Association. The scheme, which is dependent on the granting of a subsidy by other interests, involves the distribution of 720,000 loaves to genuine relief workers during the next three or four months. The price to be charged to relief workers under the scheme represents a reduction of 25 per cent, on the present standard price of 6d a loaf. The total cost of the 720,000 loaves at the standard price would be £18 ; 000 and the total reduction to the relief workers would be £4500. In order to provide a subsidy to cover this amount the association has agreed to find £3OOO, provided the remainder, £ISOO, is subscribed by relief organisations or other trade interests. The executive of the association has empowered the secretary to interview other interested bodies with a view to obtaining additional money. If the full feubsidy is available it is proposed that bread coupons each valued at 6d should be sold to relief workers at 4Jd. They would be accepted at their face value by any member of the Master Bakers’ Association who could then redeem them at their face value at the office of the association. As far as possible it is intended that the coupons shall be issued' to relief workers by the existing relief organisations with appropriate precautions against overlapping.
