OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING CONCLUDED The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was concluded yesterday, when there were present the chairman (Mr J. Wallace), and Messrs J. Sheppard, W. M. Mathewson, D. T, Fleming, W. R. Brugh, G. Livingstone, R. H. Todd, D. C, ..Cameron, W. M. Cooper, and P. M'Kinlay.

ARCHITECT’S RECOMMENDATIONS. With reference to the reconstruction of the entrance-way to the Arthur Street School, the architect submitted a report by the city engineer in which the latter stated that in order to eliminate the excessive cross fall at the bend immediately below Queen’s drive on the frontage of the Arthur Street School area, it was necessary that the street be raised at the boundary line by approximately two feet. A wall would be erected on the frontage and the existing fence reset on top of the wall and the entrance-way to the school property reconstructed to meet the position.—The architect reported having visited the site with the engineer and he recommended that the board approve of the proposal.—The architect’s recommendation was approved. Reporting on the Oamaru South Committee’s application for a contribution of £3O towards the cost of terracing portion of the western boundary of the school grounds, the architect recommended that the board contribute half-cost not exceeding £2O. —The recommendation * was adopted. ; ’■ ■ . ■ , On the architect’s recommendation it was decided to contribute half-cost towards the top-dressing of the St. Clair School playground.—An application by the committee for a school bell was declined. The following appointments were confirmed; —John V. Nagle, sole teacher, Fruitlands; Ruth I. Kelcher, sole teacher, Lauder Railway; Dulcie A. Rodger, sole teacher, Puketi; Clara E. Egerton, sole teacher, Waipori; Jessie A. Green, infant mistress, North-East Valley; Millicent B. Potts, assistant, Hampden; Elizabeth N. Young, assistant, Kensington; Margaret A. Macdonald, assistant, Waitati. SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.

The board appointed the following commissioners for schools which had failed to elect committees: —Fuchsia Creek, Messrs J. Kingan and H. E. Ewing; Puketiro, Messrs E. A. Rosie and E. Bennett; Waipori Falls, Mr D; S. Mackenzie: Makarora, Messrs G. R. Humphrey and L. F. Crawford; Chaslands, Mr Farquharsou; Buscot, Messrs J. R. Sanders and E. A. Munro; Pukerangi. Messrs C. H. Hyslop and K, J. Jopp; Kuri Bush, Messrs J. W. Geeves, and M'K, Marshall. COMMITTEE ELECTIONS CRITICISED,

. A letter was received from Mr A. Guild complaining of the validity of the StrathTaieri School Committee election.—The chairman said that as far as he could see the. election was quite in order, and the letter was received. A similar letter was received from Mr G. Bond in respect of the Tahakopa Committee election, and in this case also the letter was received, the board deciding to take no action. GENERAL.

In regard to an application by the Port Molyneux Committee for a shelter for the teacher’s car, the board decided to allow the shed from the old school to be used for the purpose, the committee to bear the cost of having it removed. The Taieri Beach School Committee applied for a conveyance service for a number of the children attending the Taieri Beach School.—The ip alter was left in the hands of the chairman and Mr Brugh for investigation and rejporl.
