THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The Kaka Point monthly meeting took place on June 7, Mies Bates presiding. The motto for the month was “Ideals are the very soul of life." The roll-call, “ Emergency dishes for unexpected guests,” brought forth several tasty recipes. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs Sharpe and Miss H., Hines.

The monthly, meeting of the Popotunoa Women's Institute wag held on Saturday, June 17. The president (Mrs M'Kenzie) presided. An interesting report from Mre Sanders, delegate to the Otago Federation meeting, was read. The roll call, “how I can best help my institute,” brought forth many good ideas. Miss E. M'Kenzie gave an interesting demonstration on the making of paper roses. The competition for the month was “ the best darned sock or stocking,” the winners being: Mrs M'Kenzie 1, Mrs Watkins 2, Mrs Nelson and Miss M'Kenzie 3 (equal). A humorous item &Iven by Mrs M'Kenzie was enjoyed" by all present. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Watkins and Nelson.

Papatowai held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 6, when, owing to the inclemency of the weather, only nine members were present. Mrs W. fi. Latta, the Papatowai delegate at the Otago Provincial Federation Conference, gave an interesting talk on the work accomplished during the year, and the exceedingly pleasing prospects for the coming year. The roll call, “A Winter Pudding,” owing to the utility of the answers, proved one.Of tlie most profitable of the year. The demonstration for the evening was given by Mrs G. Fiveash, who explained explicitly the method of making a work basket for an armchair. Mrs F. Adams and Mis s L. M'Cullough were the hostesses for the evening.

At the monthly meeting of the Clydeyale branch, the president, Mrs Weir, presided over a good attendance. The delegate for the branch reported on her visit to the Otago Federation Conference in Dunedin. Mrs R. Dunlop moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Macfarlane for her interesting and comprehensive report. A “visitors’” book was given by Mrs Kee. Arrangements for the forthcoming birthday party .were discyssed and the programme prepared. A competition for the best rug made of waste material was won by Mrs Weir, who exhibited a beautiful example of handcraft. All the exhibits were of high merit. The demonstration, by Mrs Kee, “ Icing a Birthday Cake,” was a feature of the afternoon, Mrs Kee’s handwork being closely watched and much admired. Mrs Webb proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Kee for her interesting lesson, Mesdames Hewitt, Souness, P. Miller, and Webb were the hostesses for the afternoon.

Beautiful weather prevailed for the third birthday party of the Warepa Institute on June 13. There was a large attendance, representatives being present from Benhar, Waiwera, Puerua, Romahapa, Paretai, Balclutha, and Lovell’s Flat, and apologies received from Kaitangata, Kaka Point, Stirling, and Papatowai. The president (Mrs Ayson) welcomed the visitors. The roll call was a limerick, and highly original and amusing. A flowername guessing competition was won by Mrs M'Kenzie. (Waiwera). Items were contributed bj' Mrs Walker, Mrs MMutosh, Miss Cross, and Miss Stewart, and a playette by Misses Heckler, Farquhar. and Ayson. The articles which won second prize in the bay at the Dunedin Show were displayed. The birthday cake, made by Mrs Brownlie and iced by Mrs Miller, was cut by Mrs Cross (secretary). Mrs Stevenson (Waiwera), on beliald of all institutes, thanked Warepa for the enjoyable afternoon they had spent.

The monthly meeting of Dunback was held in the Coronation Hall on June 14. Miss Bell presided over a good attendance of members. One new member was welcomed. After a routine of business had been gone through Miss Bell gave an interetsing report as a delegate to the Otago Federation in Dunedin. In lier remarks Miss Bell thanked all the members who had helped in making the bay a success at the Dunedin Winter Show. The institute gained third place (equal with Janefield). The members were then

from Mrs Thcomin,. (Dunedin), who showed excellent lantern slides of Dalmatia and Yugoslavia taken during a tour of the Adriatic. These included views of old Baguson, Trogir, and parts of Montenegro. The Roman, Turkish, and Venetian influence on local architecture indicated the various over ports of the Regions. Glimpses of native costume and customs gave members an idea of the great difference existing between life as lived in Eastern Europe and in Northern Otago. Members expressed their appreciation of the visitor’s interesting talk by a ftearty vote of thanks. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Bouker, Matheson, and Murphy, and Miss Russell.

Miss Burn presided over the Mosgiel monthly meeting. The speaker for the evening was the Rev. Mi* Graham, whose talk on “Powell River —the Garden City of British Columbia” —was very vivid and interesting. Mrs Taylor and Miss Haigh then gave an instructive account of their visit to the Leaders' Schpol.-<.Dtir-ing the evening musical items were provided by Misses Owens and Logan, the latter prefacing her performance by a short explanatory talk. Misses Patterson, Milner, and'Mitchell were hostesses. Miss Hendry has been instrumental in starting a music circle, and the first meeting was held on Monday, May .29, when the members were fortunate in having Miss Milliccnt Rodger, who gave biographical sketches of various composers, followed by selections from their works, Naseby held a Scottish evening on Tuesday in the Presbyterian meeting room. Mrs Dryden (vice-president) presided over a good attendance of members. The motto for the month was “ Ir ill behoves any of us to talk about the rest of us.' The roll call, “A Scotch Story," was well answered by some novel stories being told. The competition for the evening—- “ Oatcakes and Shortbread "—was won by Mrs MacMillan with Miss M. Francis second. Mrs Brown kindly entertained the ladies by giving an interesting address on “Edinburgh and its Surroundings," which was much enjoyed. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames ■lnder and M. Francis.
