“OLD SALT’S” FRAUDS
Alleged to have represented himself to landladies as the captain of a steamer, James King, aged 80. a homeless seaman, was lately charged at Southampton with obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences. King presented a debonair figure in court. Wearing, a light grey suit, coloured tie, and spats over patent leather shoes, his weather-beaten face was crowned by snow-white hair, and he regarded the magistrates through horn-rimmed glasses. The police stated that King had a bad record in crime, which started 21 years ago, and there were 22 previous convictions against him for false pretences, the sentences including three terms of three years’ penal servitude. He was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment.. -
