OTAGO SWIMMING CENTRE

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES The prizes won at the Otago Swimming Centre’s carnivals and races during the past season were presented to the winners at a social held last night in the Otago Motor Club rooms. There was a large attendance. The presentations were made by the president of the centre (Mr J. L. MTndoe), who said that the past season had been one of the most successful yet experienced. The centre had held no fewer than six carnivals, and in addition to club carnivals, swimming events figured on harbour regatta programmes. One of the features of the year was the institution of an interprovincial contest with Canterbury in a series of events which the Canterbury representatives! had won after an exciting competition. Otago had continued to hold its place in the swimming world of New Zealand, said Mr MTndoe, and the intermediate and junior team at Invercargill had secured six wins against Auckland’s seven. Manawatu was the only other centre to secure a win. Mr MTndoe referred to the splendid swimming of the intermediate free style champion (Walter Jarvis), who was the first Otago swimmer to break the minute for 10p yards, and who now held the Otago record of 58 l-ssec. Jarvis had also established a New Zealand Senior record of 25sec for 50 yards during the season, although this had since been beaten. The other outstanding intermediate was Reg. Geddes, and during the year he had broken the 10Q yards breaststroke New Zealand record in his division no fewer than three times. Otago’s representation at the Senior championships was small, but select. Roy Calder had again won the Men’s Diving Championship, and the Ladies’ Championship went to Miss Doris Foote, and Miss Eggers was third. It was worthy of note that for several seasons past Otago had won all three New Zealand diving titles, which showed its supremacy over other provinces in this branch of the sport. Mr MTndoe referred to Miss Maxine Mathieson’s fine performance in winning the Annette Kellerman Cup. He congratulated the clubs on the enthusiasm the members were displaying in the conduct of a queen carnival to improve the centre’s finances.

During the evening championship certificates won during the season were presented by Mr MTndoe, and also trophies won at carnivals in February and April. The following special trophies were presented:—

Olds Challenge Shield (six a-side), Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club; Roberts Cup (880 Yards Championship), J. O. Byrne_s; Hooper Cup (100 Yards), R. Nuttall; Kirkley Cup (Men’s Diving Championship), R. Calder; Hooper Bowl (Four-a-side Relay), Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club; Ravensbourne Relay Cup, Flying Squadron Relay, and Donald Stuart water polo banner, Dunedin Amateur Swimming Club. The opportunity wag taken to present Reg. Geddes, of the Kiwi Club, and Roy Calder, of the Dunedin Club, with handsome oak shields in commemoration of their fine performances on behalf of Otago.

Mr MTndoe said that Geddes had been breaking records for years past, and had capped them all this year by lowering his time for the 100 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Breaststroke to 73 4-ssec. He had improved on hi s own record three times during the season, and was always willing to assist the centre at any of its carnivals. Calder’s record was one that would be hard to beat, as he had won the Now Zealand Men’s Diving Championship seven times in the last eight years, and was the first winner of the Kirkley Challenge Cup, presented by Mr Kirkley, of Hastings. In conclusion, Mr MTndoe said the standard of swimming in Otago had reached a very high standard, and he looked forward to the day when an Otago swimmer would win the 100 Yards New Zealand Championship event. He paid a tribute to the splendid work carried out by the secretary (Mr E. C. Isaacs),
