THE PRESS OF NEW ZEALAND
HIGH STANDARD MAINTAINED REFERENCE BY GOVERNORGENERAL (Per United Press association.) AUCKLAND, June 22. Complimentary reference to the high standard maintained by the press of New Zealand was made by the GovernorGeneral (Lord Bledislie) at the opening of the Overseas League’s new club rooms. His Excellency said that he had learned from the late Lord Northcliffe that the press was a beneficent organ of public opinion. “It gives me the opportunity of saying,” he added, “ that you are very fortunate in this Dominion in having almost without exception a press of outstanding integrity, honesty and literary capacity with which I doubt if the press of any part of the world can bear comparison. Almost every distinguished visitor who comes to these shores comments upon the very high standard that the press of this country maintains. May I venture to hope that you will do all in .your power to encourage the maintenance of that standard, bearing in mind the immense power that the press wields in moulding public opinion?
