NAILED TO THE MAST
WRIT FOR SALVAGE SERVICES GOLDEN HARVEST IN DOCK. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 21. This morning a writ issued on behalf of the Wellington Harbour Board claiming £6OOO for salvage services rendered was affixed to the mainmast of the Golden Harvest. Up to the present no contract has been let for the work of repairing the steamer. The tenders, which closed Thursday, were submitted by cable to the Matson Navigation Company, the owners of the ship, at San Francisco, but so far, it is understood, no decision has been received. Pending a decision as to the future of the ship it has been arranged to patch the damaged portions of the hull sufficiently to make the vessel watertight, so that she can be taken off the dock. A start was made with this work this morning by Messrs W. Cable and Co., who will put temporary plates over the holes in the ship’s hull. It is expected that this work will be completed in time to permit of the ship being taken off the dock next Monday. The Golden Harvest has now been on the floating dock for a week, and not reckoning the charges for the first three or four days it is costing £47 a day for the hire of the dock alone.
