ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
NEW ZEALAND TEAM MATCH UNDER ELECTRIC LIGHT (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, June 21. (Received June 22, at 0.5 a.m.) The New Zealand Association football team played a match to-night against the Metropolis under electric light at the Sydney Show Ground. This was the first occasion on which football had been played in the city under artificial light, and the game was a complete novelty to the onlookers. The Metropolis won by 3 goals to 2. The teams were as follows: — New Zealand. —Zuill; Stone, Garrard; Stenhouse, Chapman, Crabbe; Ives, Barton,, Graham, Groves, and Kay. Metropolitan. Fox; Crowhurst, M'Gillivray; Black, Stone, Abercrombie; Darke, Edwards, Monagle, Evernden, Carrig. The experiment was hardly a success. There were only a few hundred spectators and fog at times obscured the players.
It was disappointing football throngh.out. Kay was the only man in the touring side to display form, scoring a brilliant goal from a seemingly impossible angle after a corner kick. Ives on the wing played well, but many of his kicks lacked direction. His centres would often go behind the net. Groves scored New Zealand’s second goal from a scrimmage in front. Metropolitan, however, was not the better team on the night and scored a rather lucky victory. The tourists’ forwards were responsible for their defeat, and there were many failures to follow through when opportunities were available.
