DEBATE ON TARIFFS A GOVERNMENT REVERSE. CANBERRA, June 21. The Government suffered its first reverse in the tariff debate in the Senate, when a motion requesting the House of Representatives to delete the deferred duties on tinned plates from the tariff schedule was agreed to by 14 votes to 13. The House of Representatives is unlikely to give its assent to the motion. THE BUILDING INDUSTRY EVIDENCE OF RECOVERY. SYDNEY, June 21. Evidence of a building recovery is provided by the Water Board’s returns for May, In the board’s area, which includes a portion of the south coast, 234 buildings were erected or altered at a cost of £220,378, compared with 141 buildings, costing £80,699 in May of last year. Shippers sought parity with New Zealand in freight rates without success. All of the concessions offered were rejected. The whole shipping position is now in a state of uncertainty. The existing contracts will expire next week, leaving shippers free to ship with the Conference or other lines.
