(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 21. While on duty early this morning at Onchunga a eonstable heard a noise inside a grocery store, and later met a man with a" swag and arrested him. On returning to the store he saw a second man, who had jumped over a fence and escaped. In the Police Court later Stanley Eugene Gibson, aged 28, was remanded on a charge of theft. Leonard Otto Hardy, aged 26, Eric Norman Vincent, aged 32, and William Reginald Hamilton, aged 82, were charged to-day with breaking into the premises of the West End Costume Company last Friday night and stealing coats, dresses, and costumes valued at £BS, and were remanded. Bail was refused. James Ernest Greensladc, aged 22, a clerk, admitted stealing a sum totalling £llO from the Henderson Town Board, by whom ho was employed collecting rates on a 5 per cent, commission. It was stated that restitution of £6O had been made, and that the balance would be paid. The accused had tried to make up the money he stole by betting at .race meetings, but he always lost. The magistrate placed the accused on strict probation for three years. WELLINGTON, June 21. A cable message received to-day by the Fox Company’s agency states that the fire at Camperdown, mentioned yesterday in the cablegrams, destroyed the theatre equipment and a portion of the premises only, and that supplies will be continued as usual. BLENHEIM, June 21. For obtaining petrol by false pretences John Crosbio Home was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment to-day. On a further charge of the theft of paint and brushes from Elizabeth Hamanu, of Christchurch, he was remanded to appear at Christchurch on June 29. In reply to a police allegation made in court to-day that ho attempted to commit suicide William Main, a rabbiter, employed at Upper Awatere, said that he merely tasted the strychnine to gauge its strangth. The police withdrew the charge, but on a further charge of helpless drunkenness Main was convicted and ordered to pay medical expenses.
