UNEMPLOYED TEACHERS
QUESTION OF RATIONING OTAGO BOARD’S REQUEST At the monthly meeting yesterday of the Otago Education Board, the chairman (Mr J Wallace) reported that the question of the rationing of teachers had been considered in committee by the board on the previous evening, and that, as a result, the following telegram had been despatched to the Director of Education (Mr N. T. Lambourne): — '■ In view of the distress at the present time, the board would be grateful if you would give immediate authority for the appointment of additional assistants to the extent of the saving in this district. In addition to the eight now approved, the saving under the department’s scheme to date warrants the employment of nine more assistants, while the additional saving under the board’s working of the scheme would provide for six more assistants. If you authorise the appointment of these 15 assistants, the board will accept the responsibility if the cost exceeds the saving. There are 95 teachers here without work, and in many homes they are the only wageearners. Please wire for the board meeting: on Thursday morning.” POSITION IN AUCKLAND ff ... , i ■ ■ (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, June 21. A statement that about 480 certificated former students of the Auckland Training College were without permanent employment as teachers w-as made at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board when the secretary supplied figures in response to a request from the department. Of this number 169, comprising 40 men and 129 women, were not employed at all, and the remainder v.’ere acting in various temporary capacities. A letter bearing on the unemployment of teachers was received from the Otago Education Board which stated that it was of the opinion that too many division O students, university graduates, were being trained, and that this had been a factor in accentuating the unemployment difficulty; The chairman (Mr Wells) said that 20 of these ex-trainees were not in permanent positions, and the board decided to endorse the opinion of the Otago Brard. ’■ '
The Otago Board referred also to the employment of additional assistants under the rationing scheme, and asked for particulars of the saving in expenditure in the Auckland district. It t was decided to reply that there was no saving in Auckland, as the payment of the additional teachers employed offset the saving in salaries.
