MOSGIEL FIRE BOARD

FIRST MEETING HELD The first meeting of the newly-formed Mosgiel Fire Board was held yesterday. Mr A. F. Cheyne (Government nominee) j occupied the r chair, and Messrs S. B. Macdonald and J. R. Callander (insurance' companies’ representatives), Messrs A. F. Quelch and F. J. Frew (Mosgiel Borough Council), and Mr R. D. Rogers (town clerk), were present. Mr Cheyne was unanimously elected chairman. Mr John White (superintendent of the Mosgiel Brigade) was present and handed in the first report. Prior to the ordinary business motions of sympathy were passed with Messrs' Quelch and Rogers, whose respective fathers had died a few days previously. The bank pass book showed a credit of £2l 8s 7d.—Noted. The necessary resolutions to enable two members to operate on the account at the bank were passed. The members appointed were Messrs Quelch and Frew. Accounts amounting to £ls 3s 7d were passed for payment. Superintendent J, White reported as follows: In presenting to you my first report since the brigade has come under the control of your board, I wish on behalf of the brigade members to extend to you their best wishes during your term of office, and trust that the same good feeling will be maintained between yourselves and the brigade as has been the case our 27 years under the local Borough Council. I wish to thank you for appointing me as superintendent of the_ brigade, and the other members in their respective offices. The personnel of the brigade remains the same as when taken over by the board, the members maintaining their keen interest in the monthly practices and meetings. Nd calls have been received during this term. Two members—namely, Deputy-superin-tendent J. Smeaton and Fireman J, Aitken, have completed 25 years’ service in the brigade. To mark the occasion gold star service medals and also a. presentation from the members will be made to them on Saturday. July 8. The equipment is in good order. Three hundred feet of hose is required in case of emergency. The report was adopted, and it was decided to send a letter of congratulation to the members mentioned who had completed their twenty-fifth year of service. The Dunedin Fire Board wrote regarding the proposed .amalgamation.—After a general discussion it was decided to hold a special meeting in a fortnight’s time. It was decided that in the meantime the Mosgiel Borough Council be requested to consider the matter, and report to the special meeting. The Under-secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, wrote in connection with the estimates, the loan, and the overdraft. — Regarding the loan he advised application to the Government Local Bodies’ Loan Board, and approved of an overdraft of £loo.—Received. The Public Works Department wrote regarding land for brigade buildings.— The board decided to inspect the site of the present fire station with a view to replying to the Public Works Department’s letter. It was decided to carry on a temporary insurance cover for members of the brigade and a fidelity guarantee policy for the secretary.
