CYCLING

FIXTURES June 24. —Green Island to North Taieri and return. July 1. —Green Island to Henley and return. July B.—Green Island to Outram and re- ; turn, via Outram and East Taieri. PROFESSIONAL NOTES The points for the Beale Cup are now: —'W. Garnon 14, M. Cannon 11, A. H. Brown 10, W. Lucas 6, B. Thomas 5, R. Wilson-Pyne 5, M. Paul 3, I. Guthrie, V. Scott, and A. Ralston 2. W. Garnon secured another win on Saturday, which places him well in the lead for the cup. This is Garuon’s first season at the game, and he has the makings of a fine rider. He is the youngest rider in the club, and with another season’s experience should, be giving the scratch men a hard struggle to gam fastest time. M. Cannon, who wag even in points with Garnon last week, secured fastest time again, thus adding two points to his score. Cannon has improved immensely this season, and did the hilly course of 26 miles in tne record time of Hit 12mm 40 2-ssec. Cannon should be riding with the scratch men very shortly. W. Lucas, the club’s oldest rider, gave Garnon a good go for first place, and was a length back at the line. J. Brosnan, who tied with Q. Johnstone for the cup last season, made his first appearance last Saturday, but showed a marked lack of training, and lost time to Cannon. A. J. Brown also was a starter, and rode with Brosnan. Like the latter, he is another rider who could do with some solid training. It is a pity _ that both these riders are kept from their training by their occupations, as they would do much to speed up the races. J. Kennedy had his first ride on Saturday also, and by the way he rode should meet with success as soon as he gets nt. It is a pity to see the committee working hard to give good prize money ami not getting the suppOTt of the ri ders. Riders should bear in mind that the larger the fields at the beginning ot the season the bigger the prizes at the end.
