DUNEDIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
I —• —. For the third concert of its season, to be offered next Thursday evening in the Concert Chamber. Town Hull, the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra has allowed patrons to choose the programme. The preponderance of votes made the Strauss beautiful “Blue Danube” waltz an easj first favourite, and the order of 'selection after that was: “1812” Overture (Tschaikovsky), “ Valsc Triste ” (Sibelius), “Finlandia” (Sibelius), “Chanson Romanesque” (de Rose), and “II Guarauy ” (Gomez). It will be note! that Beethoven, with whose works the orchestra has scored so heavily on previous occasions, is omitted from the list. This is not because no patrons desired to hear his works; rather the difficulty was that the products of his genius demanded would have necessitated a full Beethoven evening: and to solve the problem M. de Rose will introduce Urbach’s . famous fantasia, “To the Memory of Beethoven,” which enshrines the more popular movements from his greatest works, including the Adagio sostenuto from the “ Moonlight,” the aragio canstabile from “ Sonata Pathctique,” and the last part of the overture to “ Egmont/' The soloists lor the concert are Mr Hclmuth Hoffmann (pianist). Miss Gvvenda Burt (contralto), Mr B. H. Nees (Oboeist), and Mr Lloyd E. Hunter (violoncellist).
