FALSE PRETENCES
TWO MEN SENT TO PRISON. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 21. After Henry Barett, aged 30, a driver, had been arrested on a charge of false pretences, it was found that ho had made a gash in his own leg in order to substantiate the story he had told of an accident. Barett to-day pleaded guilty to obtaining £1 by false pretences from William Shackle, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Barett secured the money by stating that he had been injured in a motor accident and had to go to the hospital. He had 15 previous convictions. William James Thomas Whalloy, aged ;J5, who was last year acquitted on a serious charge following a shooting tragedy at Mount Cook, was sentenced by the Magistrate (Mr H. P. La wry) to three months’ imprisonment for obtaining £l2 10s from an hotel-keeper by false pretences. Counsel said that the accused had had a lot of publicity, and it was not easy for him to get work.
