MEDITERRANEAN WANDERINGS
TALK BY MISS M. E. JOACHIM
A very iuterestings lantern lecture on travels in Mediterranean lands was given in View Street Hall last evening by Miss M. E. Joachim, the proceeds being in aid of the funds of the Sudan United Mission. Dr E. N. Merrington, who presided, introduced the speaker, and said that the work of the mission was worthy of the support of all churches. During the evening two solos were sung by Miss Ruth Perry.
Miss Joachim took her audience for a tour in Palestine, showing slides made from her own photographs of scenes in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tiberias, Capernaum, and Tabigha on the Sea of Galilee, and then to the cedars of Lebanon. Cyprus was the next country on the tour, and after a brief outline of the history of this fascinating island, several views were shown of Nicosia, the capital, and Kyrenia, on the north coast, where riots took place in 1932. As no Mediterranean tour would be complete without a visit to Greece, some views of Athens were shown, and also of Delphi and of the Delphic festival, which was held in 1930, when “ Prometheus Bound ” and " The Suppliant Maidens,” both by Aeschylus, were performed. The return to England by way of the Delmatian coast was described, and views of Ragusa, the “ Pearl of the Adriatic,” and Spalato were included, and the tour ended with some views of Canterbury Cathedral.
At the conclusion of the lecture, JVliss Joachim was accorded a vote of thanks. The lantern was operated by Mr W. Simpson.
