Stumbles 98. THE WEATHER. Since Saturday evening local conditions have indicated an impending snowstorm, and although the ground is covered with a light mantle of white early this morning .it is little more than frozen fog. The sky is still heavily overcast. , PETTY THIEVING. : The local police officer has had a busy time of late endeavouring to solve the problem of petty thieving which has been prevalent in the town. One instance which calls for the strongest condemnation was when all the petrol was drained from the' Otago Aero Club’s plane while it was at the Cromwell aerodrome. The machine had been fuelled, up the previous evening in readiness for the trip to Dunedin next day. If it had one redeeming feature it -was that alb the petrol was taken. If a gallon or two had been left the aviator, in face of his previous work of fuelling, might have, risen for; the trip, only to crash before going very far,. FOOTBALL. At Omakauj on Saturday, Cromwell .seniors scored a runaway victory ovpr Matakanui, outclassing the opposition in all departments to the extent of 22 points to 3. Clyde defeated. Tarras by 8 points to 3. These games concluded the first round, and Alexandra is in the lead with 10 points. Cromwell is next, with nine, the next two being Matakanui (8), and Wanaka. (7). ' At Bannockburn, Matakanui B defeated the home team, 19—nil. , . 'OBITUARY. .. ;; The death occurred, at Cromwell, last 'week of Mr E, G. T. Steele, in his forty, ninth year: Mr Steele had been a populated resident of the town for the' past four years. Born in England, he came to New Zealand 20 years ago, and set up in btisiness on the West Coast. During the Great War he enlisted for active service, find sailed “with the I9th Reinforcmeuts. His total period of service in the Dominion and abroad was three and aqnarter years. He was badly gassed in France and from, the effects of this was under treatment since he returned to the Dominion. Despite his affliction he was always happy and jovial. He is survived by his wife and one son. At the funeral in the New Cemetery, Cromwell, thej.service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Heggic. Returned soldiers acted as pallbearers, and the “Last Post” was sounded by Mr C. Betts. . MINING. With the hardest frosts of the season during the past week, the rivers are now at a low winter level, the Kawarau being under the lowest mark on the gauge at the town. With a continuation of pres-‘ ent conditions a Very' low winter level) will be touched. There is every prospect of further activity on the Cornish Point claim, across the Kawarau from Cromwell. Results of the geophysical survey have been made, available to the company, and this bears but both the theory of an eminent geologist .local opinion, that a wide deposit exists towards the western, or Kawarau side, of the claim. Preliminaries towards giving the claim another trial are now in hand. , i The Ounce, Ltd., at Kawarau Gorge, is steadily at work with two shifts and still has to extend the low tunnel some distance before reaching its objective in the back, a deep gutter, which, from the lay of the country, appears to exist. Driving ahead in the main tunnel was temporarily suspended to enable the necessary timber to be placed in position; right, up to the, face: ’ While this was being done a tunnel was driven on a layer of wash at a higher level, and were occasionally ryon. In the lower level the tunnel has driven 106 feet through the bottom, and the track from the mouth of the tunnel to the river is over 220 feet, which indicates that good progress has been made. A splendid electrical outfit is in readiness to treat any wash struck. A considerable amount of outside capital is still available for areas on Cromwell Flat, in the vicinity of the rich claims, and several important transactions are reported. It is also stated in reliable quarters that some ‘very high prices per acre are being asked, and paid, for likely areas. While the Kawarau is at a low winter level, the' Clutba, draining more low-lying country than the former, is still ten feet above last winter’s lowest mark. The miners at Deadman’s Point are hard at work and are reported to he winning encouraging prospects.
