(From Our Own Correspondent.) PEMBROKE, June 19. THE WEATHER. The weather during last week wag fine and calm, with an occasional severe frost. On Saturday fog obscured the 1 sun, and late in the afternoon the fog . was very thick and low. GOLF. The Wanaka Golf Club’s match on Saturday was a medal round for both sections. The weather was overcast and foggy. The following were the best cards; — Ladies (13 holes). —Miss Wilson, 77 — 23—54; Mrs Walker, 77—22—55; Mis Collings, 67 —10 —57; Mies Scaife. 89— 26—63; Mrs Ewing. 78—14—64; Mrs Sttidholme. 89—20—69. Men (18 holes).— I T. Anderson, 99 32—67: T. Gillespie, 89 —20 —69; F. Jackson, 86—16—70; J. Faulks, 91—18—73; J. Perrow, 84—9—75; A. Wilson, 98— 18—80. FOOTBALL. On Saturday the Wanaka Club took a dual defeat from the Alexandra Club. The A team lost to the Alexandra A by 16 points to 6, and the B team wag defeated by Alexandra B by 11 points to 6. The A team’s, score was a try each by Mac Kay and Gillies. Ironside scored a try for the B team, and Robertson kicked a penalty goal. RIFLE SHOOTING. The pintha Junction Rifle Club’s match on Saturday was over the 500 yards range. Dense fog made accurate shooting difficult, and scores suffered accordingly. The following are the scores; —

The gold rifle was won by D. Morris. SMOKE CONCERT. Mr Fay May, who has been transferred to the Methven Post Office, was tendered a valedictory smoke sofcial in the Pembroke Hall on Thursday night last. Mr R. Wilson was the chairman, and in presenting Mr May with a pocket wallet, expressed the appreciation of the residents for the courteous and efficient service he had given as clerk in the Pembroke office. Mr May, who was a county representative, will be missed from the forwards in the Wanaka team. During the evening vocal items were given by Messrs Elmslie, Galloway, Steel, and Thompson, Mr Elmslie acting as accompanist. Mr Crockett, of Fairlie, will succeed Mr May at Pembroke. VERDICT OF SUICIDE. An inquest on the body of Charles Bentham, who was found shot in the head outside his hut at the head of Makarora Valley, was held in Pembroke on Satui - - day evening. The verdict of the jury was that the deceased died from a gunshot wound self-inflicted. Mr R. Walker, J.P., acted as coroner, the jury being Messrs J.’ Mackay (foreman).
