Mr Justice Kennedy left yesterday morning for Wellington to attend the Court of Appeal. Mr W. R. Brinsley left yesterday on an extended business tour of the North Island.
Mr L Whittingham Bagley travelled yesterday by the express for Wellington.
Mr Peter Dawson, Senor Arnaldo Tapia-Caballero, and Mr Hubert Greenslade, accompanied by Mr Maurice Ralph, representing J. C. Williamson, Ltd., arrived in Dunedin from the north by the evening express yesterday. Mr George B. Beath, M.A., has received advice of his election ae an Associate of. the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry. Mr E. H. Lough travelled to Christchurch by the express yesterday. Messrs A. J. Gordon (president of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association)) A. S. Falconer (vice-presi-dent), O. L. Ferens (secretary), and P. S. Anderson (district vice-president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association) left yesterday for Wellington to attend the annual conference of the Dominion organisation. To make a departmental inspection of the staff of the public service in the mandated territory of Western Samoa and Niue, the Public Service Commissioner (Mr P. Verschaffelt) and the Secretary of External Affairs (Mr Berendsen) will leave Wellington by the Maui Pomare to-morrow. They will be absent from the Dominion for about seven weeks (says a Press Association telegram), and .are due back on August 8. During Mr Berendsen’s absence Mr A. B. Ross, of the External Affaire Department, will act as Secretary of External Affairs, and Mr A. D. Thomson will act as commissioner for Mr Verschaffelt. Mr Thomson was Assistant Public Service Commissioner from 1913 to 1920, retiring from the public service in the latter year. At one time Mr Thomson was a member of the magistracy, and was stipendiary magistrate at Palmerston North from 1903 to 1912. Prior to his appointment to the Bench he was in the Justice Department.
