Dr G. H. Uttley, rector of the Southland Boys' High School, arrived in Dunedin by the express ■ from the south on Saturday morning. Mr I. Gold, of Wellington, who has been on a business visit to Dunedin, left by the express for Christchurch on Saturday morning. Mr John Fisher, of Otautau, passed through Dunedin on Saturday morning, en route for Hamilton, where he will attend the conference of the National Dairy Association. Messrs J. A. Hanan and C. J. Carrington have been reappointed to the Legislative Council for seven years as from Saturday. Messrs R. A. Wright, P. Fraser, J. Castle, and R. H. Webb have been nominated for the by-election to fill the vacancy on the Wellington City Council caused by the death of Cr Meadowcroft. Advice has been received from England that Dr William Main has passed the final examination for the Cambridge diploma of medical radiology and electrology and has received a temporary appointment to the \ radiology staff of St. Mary's Hospital. Dr Main is an ex-pupil of the Otago Boys' High School and a graduate of Otago University. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Main of this city. Messrs A. J. Gordon (president of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers' Association), A. S. Falconer (vice-president), O. L. Ferens (secretary), and P. S. Anderson (district vice-president for Otago and Southland of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association) will leave this morning for Wellington to attend the annual conference of the Dominion organisation. Mr Ferens will also visit Flock House and will spend a short holiday in the North Island before returning to Dunedin. During the supper adjournment in the chess telegraph match between Otago and Canterbury on Saturday evening the members of the Otago Chess Club made a presentation to Mr G. D. Wright, who has resigned from the honorary secretaryship of the club/ a Position he has held for nine years." Mr A. M'Dermott (president), in presenting Mr Wright with a handsome set of crystal goblets, referred to the recipient's many qualities, especially as a club secretary.
