NAVAL BUILDING
JAPANESE PROGRAMME REPLY TO THE UNITED STATES TOKIO, June 17. (Received June 18, at 6.30 p.m.) In response to the American naval plans Japan has adopted a 440,000,000 yen naval replenishment plan to be carried out in three years. The naval estimates next year are consequently expected to be slightly in excess of those for this year and will probably be 410,000,000 yen. The' American aircraftcarriers are regarded as a special menace.
On Thursday the Secretary of the United States Navy (Mr C. A. Swanson) formally announced a 238,000,000 dollars naval building programme, under which it is intended to put 32 new ships on the water in three years.
