ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

FLETCHER CUP MAORI HILL LEADING Club matches were resumed on Saturday when High School Old Boys created a surprise by defeating Northern, which was expected to give the two leading teams, Maori Hill arid Mosgiel, a run for the premiership. It is now five points behind Maori Hill, which occupies the leading position after its defeat of Mosgiel on Saturday. In this game, Mosgiel made a poor showing, rarely displaying the form of which it is capable. The games, which were the last but one of the first round, resulted as follows: —

The following fable gives the relative positions of the teams engaged in the first division to date:—

MAORI HILL v. MOSGIEL There was a good attendance at the Caledonian Ground when these teams met for the first time this season. The ground was on the heavy side, but the play did not. reach the standard expected from these clubs. Mosgiel at no part of the play looked like winners, and Maori Hill, splendidly led by Brown, were deserving of the win by two goals to nil. The teams were:— Maori Hill.— Wills, Taylor, Bayne, Dougal, Brown, Baird, Oliver, M'Cormack, Gordon, Dalziel, Balk. Mosgiel.—M'Dougall, M'Cloy, Steven, Lindsay, Porter, Truesdale, Gorrie, Whyte, Davidson, M'Leau, Skinner. Mosgiel won the toss, Maori Hill kicking . otf facing a slight breeze. Brown opened up play down the centre, Dalziel transferring to Balk, and, Gordon failing to connect with a cross, Mosgiel's defence relieved. Gorrie pressed home, a Mosgiel advance on the right, centring to Davidson, whose shot Wills held safely. Hard, even play followed. Steven cleared well down field, Skinner forcing a corner without result, another followed, and Brown aud Bayne were prominent in defence. Hill broke through on the right, Oliver crossing a nice ball; both backs were beaten, forcing M'Dougall out to clear. Gordon was not connecting With the Hill play ,at; centre-forward and Mosgiel pressed, Davidson giving Wills a low, fast drive to stop. Brown's strong play was a factor in Hill's attacking movements. M'Cloy cleared a likely chance, but Baird smartly returned to find M'Dougall safe. Excitement prevailed, when Bayne cleared strongly, M'Cormack coming through placed nicely Ato goal, M'Dougall again being forced out to clear. His kick was blocked and from Oliver's attempt to goal Steven conceded a resultless corner to save. M'Dougall cleared a long, shot by Baird and poor defence by the Mosgiel halves again let Hill through, Oliver having a shot which M'Dougall "punched out, and Balk's first-timer went over. Mos.giel's play was poor, the wingers, Skinner and Gorrie, seeing little of the ball, aud Brown's heady play gave Hill the advantage. Gordon gave Balk a fine opening, M Dougall just saving the shot at the foot of the post. Mosgiel's left wing broke through, Wills saving by coming out, but Davidson secured and shot wildly over, with the goalie out of position. Hill continued to have the running. M'Cormack and Oliver in a nice passing movement beat the defence and the latter topped the bar with a fine shot, the ball rolling over. With a strong clearance by Taylor. . Dougal, M'Cormack, and Oliver again broke through, M'Dougall saving twice in succession, but a return shot by M'Cormack hit the post, came out into play to Balk, who beat M'Dougall with a good drive. Maori Hill 1, Mosgiel nil. Mosgiel were an unsettled team, showing little combination and with M'Lean taking a roving commission, Skinner ou the left wing had few ebaiices. M'Cormack was playing fine football for. Hill and giving Oliver an opening, a corner was conceded. M'Cormack subsequently returned play to Dalziel, by an overhead kick, the. latter shooting over. Taylor and Bayne were ' holding up the Mosgiel attempts to break through, but the latter were playing too much to the centre, and half time was called with Hill attacking. With the start of the second spell. Brown sent his forwards away. M'Cloy clearing, enabled Davidson to move forward. Skinner received a nice pass, but Wills saved the winger's shot. Hill continued to play strongly, Mosgiel being hard pressed. M'Cormack drove in a hot one, which rebounded off the post'to Balk, and two corners resulted without advantage. Hill's half-line were holding the Mosgiel forwards, although Skinner and Davidson worked through to goal on one occasion. Wills clearing well. Taylor cleared a dangerous centre by. Gorrie, when the inside men clashed and Brown sent well down-field, Balk having a clear opening but shot over. The Hill attacks found the Mosgiel defence shaky, and M'Cormack sent a hard ball to 1 goal. M'Dougall threw himself at the ball anil conceded a corner, play being round Mosgiel's goal until Dalziel placed behind. Brown was outstanding in defence when Whyte and Skinner attempted to break away, and Gordon and Balk combined well until Steven sent them . back; M'Lean receiving, gave Skinner a good opening. : The winger, making good play, tested Wills unsuccessfully with a fine drive. Balk essayed a long shot, which M'Dougall fielded, play going to midfield, from which Brown placed up to M'Cormack, the latter taking a flying shot dropped the ball into goal out of reach, Maori Hill 2, Mosgiel 0. Mosgiel were playing much below its usual standard, and Hill had the game well in hand, M'Dougall's safe keeping in goal 'keeping the score down. Dougal, with a long drive, hit the crossbar, and the goalie cleared cleared shortly after with Gordon on top of him. Tn the closing stages M'Dougall again saved brilliantly a likely cross from Balk, and the game ended:— Maori Hill 2 goals. Mosgiel • Nil. Mr W. P. Smith was referee. TECHNICAL tv. Jones, beating the back, crossed in a good shot, which Greig saved. Agnew, receiving a long pass by Ramage, passed to L. Agnew, offside play being the result. From the kick Rutherford received and crossed to Condor, who sent in to Haldane, Holden saving from the latter for an abortive corner. Addison sent, to Jones, the latter to Witchall. whose shot was blocked by Ramage. Copland was playing too easy, and was beaten on several occasions. A free kick was awarded to Technical for hands. Patton placed to Armishaw, who headed over. The hill team had the advantage of pfay at this stage, Haldane twice testing Holden. L. Agnew and Rutherford, were putting in sound play ou the respective wings. T. ... Agnew missed an easy chance to equalise .with a good centre on the right, an J at halt time Technical led I—o.1 —0. On resuming a free kick to Technical looked dangerous to hill, Addison sent past however. Facing.the wind Technical had a hatd time on defence, Holden saving twice from Agnew and Rutherford. Weakness in the Roslyn halves brought about Technical's second goal, Trebilcock receiving close in beat Greig with a low I shot. Technical 2, Roslyn nil. Roslyn's I inside forwards could do little with the ball, Haldane being the only one likely to score. The hill halves sent the forwards away, Conder receiving. Cope being penalised for back charging in the penalty area. Copland took the kick and scored, Holden partially saving. Technical 2; Roslyn 1. From the kick-off the hill team came away, the forwards.rushing through for Tv Agnew to score. Technical 2, Roslyn 2. Technical battled hard to gain the lead, but Ramage was playing well at back and relieved the attacks repeatedly. Greig saved a shot by Jones, and a Roslyn advance was spoilt by T. Agnew getting offside. L. Agnew went close with a good shot, and Technical retaliated, Addison following up a rush to score with a , good drive., Technical 3, Roslyn .2. Cope was defending well at this stage, breaking up the hill attacks, in which L. Agnew and Haldane were playing well .together. Both :sides were playing strongly in the closing stages of the came, Ramage, for Roslyn, and Cope, for Technical, being sound in defence. Douglas was nyikjng nice openings for his wing, arid letting L. Agnew away. A fine cross to goal was returned by Cope, Technical rushing play to the hill goal, where Greig saved well from Jones. The game ended: Technical .. ...... 3 goals. Roslyn-Wakari ' .... 2 goals. Mr A. Bowie was referee. MORNINGTON v. Warnock, who was playing a fine game for Seacliff, repeatedly sent Hooper and Simmonds away, only to find Marshall ajid M'Kay safe at full-back. Pretty .play by Moon and Murphy gave Donnelly a chance, offside play saving Seacliff. Simmonds sent in a beautiful shot, M'Quarrie turning the ball over the bar. Two corners followed in succession without advantage to Seacliff, Moon and Murphy relieving for Mornington. Gilchrist made a nice opening for Hooper, M'Kay blocking the centre, but from a corner kick Hooper dashed in to score a good goal. Seacliff 1, Mornington nil. The second spell opened with even play, both sides defending well. Marshall, for, Mornington, and :Warnock for Seacliff, were playing well. Marshall cleared twice in succession from Baillie, who had shifted' to left-wing. A corner to Seacliff was of no avail, but Warnock again let Simmonds away on the wing, and with _ a great shot the winger beat M'Quarrie. Seacliff 2, Mornington 1. Twice Seacliff forced corners, both going behind. Moon took play into Seacliff area, passing on to Donnelly, the latter went between the backs to score a clever goal. 2—2. A doubtful penalty kick was awarded to Seacliff, M'Quarrie making a brilliant, save only to have Warnock score from the ensuing scramble. Seacliff 3, Mornington 2. : This reverse unsettled Mornington, and Seacliff played with more dash. Twice, Hooper's shots were saved by M'Quarrie. then Warnock essayed a long shot, the ball striking the crossbar and going outside. Seacliff continued to press Mornington, two free kicks relieving the defenders. Donnelly made a good run, and was nearly through when Milne blocked him. Ano'ther advance by Seacliff failed through offside play, but Gilchrist initiated a further attack by placing the.ball to O'Rorke, who scored just on time. Result:— Seacliff 4 goals. Mornington 2 goals. PORT CHALMERS v.
