CANTERBURY MARKETS

(Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. A sharp improvement in the potato market has set in since the mid-week. Though Auckland has been inquiring a little, it has not been to a sufficient extent to influence the market, and the main factor in the finning doubtless is that the crops are yielding very moderately in some districts. The dry autumn has affected the latter crops to an appreciable extent. Another factor is the probability of a further shipment of 1000 tons to South America. The shipment has not been definitely arranged for, but the probability of it during the month has had a hardening effect on the price for prompt potatoes. The ivet weather has temporarily delayed digging, and farmers are not offering many, although by this time digging should be well advanced. The Wingatui sailed during the week with a moderate consignment for the north. Stocks are now getting down in Auckland, and merchants anticipate that the belated demand will not be a week longer delayed. Whites for prompt shipment are quoted at £4 ss, f.0.b., s.i., or £3 5s oh trucks, and Julys at £5 to £5 ss, f.0.b., s.i. Dakotas advanced sharply during the last few days. Generally this variety owes its premium to a later demand from Wellington, but this season Auckland is developing a taste for this variety. Prices to growers have advanced to £4 2s Gd to £4 5s a ton, or £5 10s, f.0.b., s.i. Onions are worth £3 5s per ton on trucks, but not much is doing in this product. Fowl wheat remains unaltered at 3s 6d per bushel, f.0.b., s.e. Oats show a little change. A Gartons are worth 2s to 2s Id on trucks. The small seeds market is unchanged.
