FUTURE LIFE

" Through the Grave and Gate of Death.’ By the Very Rev. John Sinker. London Skcfflngton. (3a 6(1 net.)

Interest in Hie life beyond death, or, as the Very Rev. John Sinker terms it, “ the near hereafter,” never flags. Written originally in the moment of stress when so many were losing loved ones in the Great War and the problems of life beyond the grave suddenly became urgent, this book had as its purpose the translation simply and succinctly of the views of those whoso studies and researches bad given thorn a standing and a right to speak on these matters. There are in this third edition 10 discourses designed to bring comfort and peace of heart to those in sorrow. “ The best is yet to be" is the argument developed steadily and surely from beginning to end. The Archbishop of York, in an introduction, says quite truly that “ where a future life is denied or accepted with so slender assurance that it exerts no influence on conduct the ethics consistent with materialism tend to prevail. It is faith in the future life which chiefly eus tains the spiritual quality of life on earth.” The topics discussed are such as ‘‘Docs death end all?” ‘‘Where are the dead?—Are they conscious beings? Can we. hold communion with them?” and prayers for the dead. The discourses have been carefully prepared and with deep reverence, and can be commended to interested readers as worthy of careful reading. G. H. J.
