EARLY CANTERBURY WRITERS LECTURE IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, June 15. Contributions to the early literary history of the Canterbury province (New Zealand) were the subject of a paper which Mrs William Moore (“ Dora Wilcox ”) read to the Australian and English Association in Sydney. Mrs Moore made special reference to Samuel Butler, who, she said, occupied a curious position in English literature. Mrs Moore linked the history of Canterbury with a description of Canterbury’s early literature, and referred at length to the efforts of the early writers associated ,with Canterbury. She dealt in turn with James Fitzgerald, Charles Bowen, Dr Rouse, Henry Jacobs, Jessie Mackay, and others.
