CONCILIATION COUNCIL

TINSMITHS AND SHEET METAL WORKERS The Conciliation Council sat yesterday to consider an industrial dispute between the Otago and Southland tinsmiths and sheet metal workers and the employers. Tho conciliation commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) presided. The assessors for the employers were Messrs J. E. Wheeler, George Christie and A. S. Cookson, and for the Dunedin branch of the Amalgamated Engineering and Allied Trades Union Messrs W. Holdaway, E. Montgomery and A. J. Rico. The employers asked for a new award, and the union submitted as a counter proposal the terms and conditions of the existing award. . The chief points for discussion related to wages. Under the old award the minimum wage for journeymen sheet metal workers and tinsmiths was fixed at 2s 3d per hour. The employers in their new proposals offered Is 10Jd per hour. The employers also asked for certain alterations in the existing overtime clauses, piecework conditions, etc. After discussion the rate of pay was fixed at Is lid per hour. A full agreement was also reached legarding the other points in dispute.
