WRONG IN PRINCIPLE

USE OF UNEMPLOYED LABOUR

(Per United Pres* Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 15. At a meeting of the Waiinairi County Council the chairman reported that he had interviewed the district telegraph engineeer in reference to the .raising of the teleghaph poles near the Waimakariri bridge. The engineer had suggested that the department would be satisfied if the council supplied the labour for the digsring and filling of the holes by unemployed labour. A member said that, the whole thing was wrong in principle. “ Here we have a suggestion that a necessary work should be done by unemployed labour. We will never get anywhere if that is done, and soon we will have everything done by that means.” It was decided to inform the department that the council could not agree to the proposal.
