BASKET BALL

By Watch. FIRST GRADE Ex-Girls I are still undefeated in the First Grade competition, and head the list with 10 Cup points. _ Albany II follows close behind with six Cup points, having lost one match, and with one game still to be played. Albany I also has six points, but has lost two matches out of five. A good game should be seen next Saturday when Ex-Girls I meet Albany II in the second round. When these two team's met in the first round, Albany II was! playing its first, game of the season, and after leading by five goals to four at half time, was finally defeated by 14 —11. If Ex-Girls should win again on Saturday their position as head of the list should be fairly secure, leaving few possibilities for other teams. if, on the other hand, Albany II should win, they have every opportunity of running out .top, equal with Ex-Girls, provided they can again defeat Albany I. Two good games were played last Saturday on the University court, neither game being as one-sided as the large scores would suggest. Ex-Girls I met University at 2.30 < p.m., with Mr J. Breese as the referee. University were playing their first game since the vacation, and did not at, any time during the game have their opponents fully extended. The game was not up to First Grade standard, but at times some bright, smart movements were seen. Ex-Gii'ls’ defence, Misses G. Thompson and J r and M. Sutherland, make a very strong defensive combination, and, as usual, the University forwards found it very hard to battle through them. University defence worked hard to keep down their opponents’ score, but had trouble in keeping up with the speed and unerring combination of Misses Cupples, Sunderland, and Howell. The final score was 21 —10 in favour of ExGirls.

The second match was played between Albany I and Ex-Girls’ll. The game began with slow and rather ragged play, but as the players settled down the pace increased until it reached top speed within the last few minutes of the game. Albany appeared to miss more opportunities at goal and fumble more passes than one would expect from this team, while ExGirls at last seemed to feel confident in their combination between centres and forwards. Albany took the throw off and very quickly scored, but Ex-Girls replied just as smartly. Albany then began to establish a lead which continued to creep up until the final whistle. Miss M'Lean and Miss Meinung shared honours for - Albany, while Miss Farquharson and Miss Jamie were responsible for goals for Ex-Girls. Miss Jamie scored with a clever shot from well out. bringing the score to B—48 —4 in favour of Albany. The Albany forwards continued to pile up the scores while the opposing forwards had difficulty in breaking away from their defence. The half time score was 14 —4. The second spell was a reptition of the first, except for a few outstanding passing movements. Albany were definitely superior in all sections, and made easy work of the game, which ended with the score 27 —7 in Albany’s favour. Miss M. Fleming was the referee. SECOND GRADE In the Second Grade the order of the four top teams remains the same Albany, Roslyn, Caversham, and Blue Triangle. Albany bad a very easy win. defeating Tinopai by 21 goals to 3. . Caversham had another win, defeating Maori Hill by 23—17, and Blue Triangle made short work of First, winning by the large score of 19 to 7. University and Athletic had a more even tussle, the former eventually winning by the ode', goal, 14—13. The match Roslyn v. Rnwhiti was played at College I. Rawhiti won the toss and was the first to score. This was soon evened up, however. < Good combined nlay and accurate shooting by Miss B. Knowles and Miss L. Guthrie accounted for the next seven goals. At half-time the score stood at 13—5 in Roslyn h favour. On recommencing, Rawhiti was again the first to score and some good basket ball was witnessed, < Roslyn centres being conspicuous for their combination. For Rawhiti, Miss N. Henderson did most

of the shooting and Miss A. King played a solid game as defence, For Roslyn, Miss H. Abbott played her usual good game, whilst Miss E. Gillies was a dependable defence. The game ended 16—9 in Roslyn’s favour. Miss 8. Foster controlled the game. THIRD GRADE Of the four matches played in the Third Grade only two results are to hand. , Musselburgh maintained their position at the head of the table by defeating First by 20 to 3. Woolworths, who rank second on the list, suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Central. who won by six goals to one, a very small score after 40 minutes’ play. Central players have now a better understanding of one another's play and should do well at the annual tournament. FOURTH GRADE In the Fourth Grade Blue Bird played well to defeat Wesley by 22 to 6. D.I.C. put up a very large score against Musselburgh, winning by 32 to 5. Tinopai and Rawhiti were evenly matched, the former winning by 16 to 14. The game between Normal I and Central was characterised by too many long passes. Central team, in particular, would be well advised to vary their play and develop the short, effective passes instead of the impossibly long passes which the centre players often demanded. The final score was 10 to 6 in favour of Normal I. The match Blue Triangle v. Roslyn was played at Maori Hill, This proved a strenuous game, both teams fighting for supremacy. At half-time Roslyn was leading by one point. In the second half both teams played a good game, each holding its own, Roslyn still being a point in the lead. Just before the whistle blew, quick passing by Blue Triangle, ending in a goal, evened the score, and the game ended in a draw, 16 all. Mr Sansom was the referee. FIFTH GRADE The position of the four top teams in the Fifth Grade remains the same— Blue Triangle, Caversham, Maori Hill, and North-East Valley. Blue Triangle had a good win against Maori Hill (10 —5), and Caversham accounted for Mosgiel 11 —5. St John’s had their first win for the season, defeating North-East Valley by 20—13. St. John’s, a new team in the competition, is improving rapidly under Miss P. Benzoni’s coaching. The game between Gipsy and Wesley was characterised by much field work, with very little results. The final score was 6—4 in favour of Gipsy. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE A meeting of the executive was held on Friday evening last, those present being Mrs W. B. Taverner (in the chair), Mrs R. S. Black, Mrs A. M'Caughtric, and Misses R. Mackenzie (secretary), S. Foster, M. Fleming, I, W-. Knight, M. Fai’quharson, M. Pearce, K. Mercer, C. Mune, A, King, A. Scott, and M. Wright. The correspondence received included a letter from the secretary of the West Otago Basket Ball Association, stating that at a meeting held in Tapanui on May 12 it had been decided to affiliate with Dunedin. This is the result of extension work done by the president (Mrs Taverner), who has now two sub-associa-tions linked up with Dunedin. Another letter was received from Mrs Dreaver, secretary of the Balclutha Subassociation, reporting on the work there. Five teams are taking part in the weekly competition, two High School teams, ExHigh, Kiwi, and Union. It is hoped that some of these teams will take part in the annual tournament in Dunedin.

Correspondence received from Wellington stated that the New Zealand tournament would be held at Gisborne during the school vacation in August. This again brought up the subject of raising the necessary funds. Selectors and coaches for the various representative teams were appointed as follows: — A Grade. —Selectors —Misses S. Foster, M. Fleming, and R. Sunderland; coach, Miss R. Mackenzie.

B Grade (he., selected from Second and Third Grades). —Selectors —Mieses M. Farquharson. _ M. Pearce, and M. J. Breese; coach. Miss S, Foster. C Grade. (Fourth and Fifth Grades).

. —Selectors —Mrs M'Gaughtrey, Miss H. i Henderson, and Mr A. Murie; coach, i Miss S. Foster. The secretary was authorised to write . inviting the Southland Association to ■ send a team to play the annual OtagoSouthland match, the date suggested being July 29. It was decided to hold the annual First Grade tournament on July 15, no matches being played in the other grades on that day. The Basket Ball Association appointed Miss M. Fleming as its representative on the Referees’ Association. INTERHOUSE COMPETITION Last Saturday’s matches showed a marked improvement in the standard of play of interhouse basket ball. One noticed with pleasure the open game, quick short passing and the fewer number of infringements. It is to be hoped that these improvements will continue. The most interesting match played on Saturday was between two unbeaten teams —C.F.H. and Penrose’s. The former proved itself to be the superior team and is to be congratulated on its fine play. The final score was C.F.H. 9, Penrose’s 5. The match between Defiance and Eagles was very even throughout. The passing of both teams was splendid. The game ended, Defiance 12, Eagles 7. An exciting match was played when D.S.A. met Aotea. Both these teams show a sporting spirit, which should carry them far during the season. The Interhouse Sports Club holds an indoor team games evening on every second Monday in the month. This week 140 girls were present in the Y.W.C.A. gymnasium for the beginning of the competition. These girls showed great enthusiasm and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The teams competing were:—Kia Ora, C.F.H., D.S.A., D.1.C.. Clarendon, lona, Redwings, Sargoods, Fern, Eagles, Moana, Defiance, Y.W.C.A. Owing to the number of teams competing the races, which were Overhead Relay. Zigzag Relay, Diagonal Passing, and Hoop Relay, -were played off in heats. The points given were three for first, two for second, and one for third. The final points for the cup were as follows: —D.S.A. and Kia Ora, 6 points; Moana., 5 points; Redwings and Defiance, 3 points; C.F.H., 1 point. The contest was preceded by a meeting of 17 basket ball captains who discussed important points in basket ball matches and the games evening. BASKET BALL DANCE For the first time in its history the association is contemplating holding & combined dance. The sub-committee, consisting of Mrs R. S. Black. Misses R. Mackenzie, K. Mercer, M. Scott, C. Murie, and A. King, appointed by the Management. Committee to organise, the function, has already made tentative arrangements, It is proposed to hold it in the Early Settlers’ Hall, probably towards the middle of July, and to make the charges very low, so that all players will have an opportunity of attending

if they so desire. I GENERAL The secretary of the association (Miss ] Mackenzie) asks dubs to note that by ' its by-laws members of teams must play ■ in its club’s registered costume. It was I not felt desirable to force the matter at ' the commencement of the season, owing to ' the stringent circumstances of many of i the playing members, but many instances 1 have been noted where players have not 1 been wearing club colours just thx-ough ) lack of thought. Also, by the by-laws, > teams are allowed only five minutes grace, < if all the players are not present at the * appointed hour. Please be punctual, t as there are always two matches on every i ground each week. t Some captains have been neglecting f their duties in regard to seeing that poles 1 arc put away after games on Saturday e afternoons. These must be placed where 1 they are taken from, and grounds must t be left in a scrupulous condition. f Complaints have been received regard- 1 ing the state of some of the balls used y in matches. By the Rules of the New v Zealand Association balls must weigh not i more than 15oz, nor less than 13oz, and v they must not be more than 28in, nor less y than 27in in circumference. b
