Fine quality champagnes were cheaper than whisky in London recently. Pominery 1921, a famous brand of a famous champagne year, was sold at 10s lOd a bottle—ls 8d below the price of proprietary whiskies. Perrier Jouet 1917, another famous brand, was sold at 7s 8d a bottle, and Moot 1915. at 6s lOd. It was at a Christie’s sale that these low nrioes were paid. A few years ago such figures would have horrified both wine merchants and connoisseurs. To-day so reduced is the demand for champagne that they are accepted with a shrug and a sigh as just another sign of the times.
