LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
IMPENDING RETIREMENTS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 13. Within the 'next few days, several members of the Legislative Council, including the Chairman of Committees, Mr J. A. Honan, are due to retire. Inquiries made in official quarters to-day indicate that it is unlikely that any fresh appointments will be made until the next session is opened.
The General Purposes Committee of the London County Council has, suggested a tax on horse traffic to relieve the congestion in the streets of the great cities. “It would not violate any -established principle,” says the committee, “if a direct charge were to be put on horsedrawn vehicles even when used solely for the conveyance of goods in the, course of trade.” The committee states that 12 per cent, of the heavy traffic through the Thames tunnels consists of slow-moving horse vans, and, that, by preventing motor vehicles from running freely, “ horse traction reduces the effectiveness, of the streets.” Horse traffic still persists, principally because for short journeys it is dheaper than motor transport. A tax might remove or at least reduce thig advantage. , ,
