GIRL PILOT FINED

"I know it is the desire of youth to show off these days, but by showing off you might have caused a serious accident,” said the. Mayor of Hove recently to a girl of 19, daughter of a doctor, who was fined £2 for dangerous flying. She was Yvonne Hackworth, of Pembroke Gardens, Hove, and it was alleged (says the Daily Mail) that she flew an aeroplane over Hove at such an altitude as would have made it impossible for her to have landed safely should anything have happened to the machine. The chief constable, Mr W. C. Hillier, said that Mr Reginald Thomas Halliwell, a commercial air pilot with 10 years’ experience, was in his garden when he saw the aeroplane approaching at an altitude of about 2000 feet. It glided down to the housetops to a height below 200 feet, circled, dived, and then rose again quickly. The turns were made with very little speed, gnd exceasive banking caused the machine still further to lose height. Miss Hackworth, when seen, said that she had had eight hours and a-half solo flying experience, and it was the first time she had been allowed to leave the aerodrome alone. She circled low as she wanted to wave to her parents.
