OBITUARY

MR F. H. COOKE The death which occurred at Palmerston last Saturday morning in his seventy-first year of Mr Frank, Herbert Cooke will bring to the minds of the " older residents of this city a figure that was well known in the cricket field in the eighties. v Mr Cooke was born in Melbourne, but was educated in Kent, and came to New Zealand in 1879. He was articled in the legal profession to Mr Denniston (afterwards Mr Justice Denniston) in the firm of Stewart and Denniston, of Dunedin, and was admitted as a barrister in 1884. In 1890 he joined Mr Arthur Southey, who had established a business in Palmerston North in 1882. After the dissolution of the partnership he practised with Mr Bruce Beal, and subsequently on his own account He was appointed Crown Solicitor about 10 years ago, and was borough solicitor for many years. During his residence in Dunedin he was one of the mainstays of Otago cricket. He was a very successful slow, left-handed, break bowler. In 1883, playing for Otago against Canterbury, he took 15 wickets for 94 on a Christchurch wicket; in the following year, at Carisbrook, he secured 11 Canterbury wickets for 79; and in December, 1884, he took nine Canterbury wickets in one innings at Lancaster Park for 73. He is survived by his widow and two sons, Mr P. B. Cooke and Mr Ralph Cooke, of whom the latter is at present in England. MR WILLIAM BONNER The death occurred in Cromwell Hospital last week, of Mr William Bonner, a native of Ireland, who, when a boy, arrived in Dunedin by the ship Black Prince in the early sixties. He went to Cromwell when the goldfields started, and worked at mining and other occupations for some years. Then he spent some years in Southland, where he was engaged chiefly in farm work, but 40 or more years ago he returned to the Cromwell district, where he speat the rest of his life. j
