The British Admiralty has recently carried out secret trials with a new device which enables seaplanes to land .and be taken aboard their carrier even in the roughest weather. A big Canvas apron towed behind the ship flattens the waves and makes a comparatively smooth “ fairway ’’ on which the seaplane lands. The machine is then taxied on to the. apron, which forms an inclined runway np to the stern of the ship, and is hauled aboard by a crane. These tests have been made by the smallest of the aircraft carriers, off Gibraltar. This vessel is one of the ships equipped with catapult apparatus for launching seaplanes into flight from her decks, and she is in constant use for experimental work with the Naval Air Arm. This apron used for bad weather is made of the strongest canvas obtainable and reinforced by stout wooden spars running lengthwise. The speed of tin; ship keeps the-apron on the surface, and with sufficient towage a stretch of comparatively smooth water is flattened out in the wake. When not in use the apron is hauled aboard, rolled up like a giant carpet and stowed away.
