Investment Talks by “ The Old Counsellor ” No. 9: SHOULD I BUY INVESTMENT TRUST STOCKS? This Is a question frequently asked by both Investors and prospective Investors. Until recently New Zealand financial authorities regarded the Investment Trust Movement ns a passing phase. Observation of the movement shows, however, that the Investment Trust has been built Into and become a part of our national Investment structure, just as radio has become a part of our living habits. For that reason no Investor, nor any prospective investor, can afford to disregard It In making his future plans. Bet me explain what an Investment Trust really Is. This Institution has long been familiar In Great Britain. It Is simply a machine for the co-operative action of Investors who desire to secure the advantages of expert management and to apply the principles of Insurance to their investments through diversification. Investment Trusts were originated for the purpose of enabling the small Investor to acquire interests In-a wide range of sound undertakings. Before the advent of the Investment Trust such methods were only available to large financial institutions, the amounts involved in these transactions being In excess of the capital of the average or even the large individual investor. Having carefully examined the Investment Trust movement In general and the New Zealand Investment Trust Limited in particular, I am convinced that Investors will find a combined Investment in the Debentures and Shares In this Company will amply justify their confidence. Carefully modelled on the lines of the great British and Scottish Trusts, which have continued to pay dividends in spite of the depression, these 5 per cent, debentures of the New Zealand Investment Trust Limited are, in mj opinion, as safe as Government Bonds or Local Bodies’ Loans.
