STOWAWAYS ON MARAMA
FRUITLESS SEARCH FOR WORK (Pekn. United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 13. Two young men from Takaka, Nejson, were charged before Mr W. R. M'Kean, S.M., in the Police Court to-day with stowing away on the Marama at Auckland on June 2. The accused, James John Dalton, a labourer, aged 22, and Ronald Alva Simmonds, a labourer, aged 20, both pleaded guilty. It was stated that the two young men crossed from Nelson to the North Island and walked from Wellington to Auckland in search of work. They boarded the Marama at Auckland, but were detained in Sydney and sent back to New Zealand. The accused were convicted, and each was ordered to pay £5 in restitution, in default six weeks’ imprisonment.
