O’Connor’s new training establishment. . „ ... The winter meetings at Timaru, Ashburton, and Oamaru on three separate Saturdays will entail some moving about on •the part of horses engaged at •>aeh fixture. Silver Ring had his first sprint on Saturday and ran over half a mile in 51 2-sseo He will be raced at the Wellington winter meeting and then shipped”To Sydney. Mr P. D. M'Nab will act as starter at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s winter meeting on Saturday, and also at the South- Canterbury Hunt Club’s fixture on July 22. . ■ , . Amongst those doing solid work at Kicc'arton for the Timaru meeting are Imperial Spear, Polydora, Rational 11, Don Jose, Royal Sceptre, Ranelagh, Ramo, and Zeebrugge. . . , - Two-year-olds and upwards which nave never - Won a race of the value of 50sovs af the time of starting are eligible for the Novice Stakes, to be run at the Oamarue Jockey Club’s meeting. Noihinations are j due to-day for the Oamaru Jockev Club’s meeting,, which takes place on July 1. The .programme includes- a two-mile steeplechase, which has generally been run over brush hurdles and a good educative course for the novice over, country. ... The spirit of racing law may be taken to mean that, one of the principal events on a programme must be run over a mile and a-quarter. Some clubs have been m the habit of tacking the distance on to a hack race, but if the Canterbury Jockey Club’s’ proposal is converted into law it will mean that an open race and a hack race must be run over the distance.

Concentrate, whose racing career came to an end in the autumn, has been sent to Nelson, Mr R. J. Murphy presented him to a friend there and. he will enjoy a good home for the/remainder of his life. Concentrate won over XO.OOOsovs in stakes. ■ . , An interesting addition to the Kules oi Racing consists in the proposal to include a,hurdle. race or steeplechase on every programme issued-for a meeting held from March F to September 1. When considering the proposal, it should not be forgotten that hurdle racing and steeplechasing supply, the most' attractive card that a club, can offer, and from that point of view;the idea, should meet with general favour. : At the same time, it‘should be impressed on clubs that every facility should be supplied for making and schooling horses to, supply the, fields for their most. ; attractive',races.. T _ A large number of people who indulge in ■a; bet like to win or lose, and ; for that reason the’place sjrstem does not win much patronage from • them. Hence, they bet on the hit or miss principal of playing to win and avoid the place bet. Others are realising that they can do a lot of business on the place-machine, but have to be rather fortunate to finish with a profitable day. Occasionally a good place dividend/crops up, But they are few and far between, and when a fancied horse is backed for a-place the profit, i£ any, is small. Hence many will favour, the proposal of the Canterbury Jockey. Club To extend the size of the fields on which place -dividends should be paid. Good fields remain after acceptances for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, ■to be held on Saturday. Those who dropped out of the Pukaki Hurdles were ’ Quinopal, Hounslow, Rational 11, Lady Rene, and Speakeasy. Membo and Night Maid were the only two to drop out of the Prince Edward Handicap. Nylotis, Calham, French. Fleet, Radiac, Gay'Jim, Dan Russell, and Deerette did not; have their engagements continued in the. Pareora Steeples. Palantua, Night Flyer, Brown Pearl, Some Good, Pharaoh, and Quite Soon are the absentees from the Temuka Handicap, and those on the minimum in the Seadown Handicap dropped out except Air Raider. This leaves the club with an attractive card which should provide an interesting - day’s sport, - ■- ■■ ■ ■ ■ It is reported that since his return from the Dunedin meeting Hounslow has been in a bad way, suffering from the effects of a severe cut in the coronet, caused by a twisted plate on one,of his hind feet. The trouble happened in his race on the concluding day of the meeting, and the gelding was very lame when he arrived Some. The injury is fairly deep, and he ig still unable to bear-any weight on the affected limb. This will mean Hounslow’s absence from activities for some time, and will, seriously‘affect his winter programme. He has been a very unlucky horse for the last two seasons, and it is unfortunate for his owner and trainer that just as he looked like securing high honours in the hurdling arena, he should suffer such a severe set back.
