All through the Afghan War of 1879 Sir Thomas was in charge of the Cholera Hospital at Peshawar; when cholera raged in Egypt in 1883 he wag there to fight it ; and he accompanied the heroic column which fought its way , to, Khartoum in the attempt to save Gordon. In India he is known as the man who lowered the death rate among soldiers by onethird.
