The army doctor who founded the Bearer Corps in which Gandhi served in South Africa, General Sir Thomas Gallwey, has died at 80. He had a wonderful career, and during hia long life must have saved of lives. There has hardly been a war since 1879 in which he did not serve, and his experiences must have been thrilling. All through the Afghan War of 1879 Sir Thomas was in charge of the Cholera Hospital at Peshawar; when cholera raged in Egypt in 1883 he wag there to fight it ; and he accompanied the heroic column which fought its way , to, Khartoum in the attempt to save Gordon. In India he is known as the man who lowered the death rate among soldiers by onethird.
