HANDS THAT EXPRESS YOUR PERSONALITY

Anyone may have beautiful hands (says Everylady’s Journal). They are not a whim of Nature, nor yet a gift of the gods. Their beauty depends solely upon you and your knack of taking care of them. I have .heard of women who will wash their hands, file their nails, and let it go at that. They console themselves by thinking that “they look all right from the distance.” Someone once said. “ The mountains, too, at a distance appear airy masses and smooth, but when beheld close they are rough.” And bo it is with those merely washed hands. Even a beautifully-shaped hand is not attractive without regular care of the nails. The business of filing comes first.

This' is important. Every woman s fingers are shaped just a bit differently. It is quite impossible to look at one woman’s nails and say, “ I want mine just like hers.” Study the contour of your finger-tips, and round your nails to protect them. Pointed fingers should _ have pointed nails—but never too pointed. Slightly rounded fingers will have slightly rounded nails. , The woman with flat finger-tips must not be discouraged and say, “ It’s no use. My fingers are just ugly.” Try letting the nails grow a little longer and squeezing the fingers two or three times a day. You have no idea how much this will do for those unattractive finger-nails. Soap-suds and water next. The water must never be hot—just lukewarm. A small nail-brush is essential to the equipment. After, drying the hands with a very soft towel, use a good lotion—-this, 1 to avoid any chance of chapping. Cream is good also. 1 have bought myself, a pair of canvas housemaids’ gloves, and every night I smother my hands and nails with cream, and slip on these loose gloves. Honestly, it is amazing what this nightly treatment docs. Not only does it make the hands beautifully soft and white, but it also keeps the cuticles soft, and does away with those troublesome and painful hang nails. I The good old-fshioned orange stick is my cuticle caretaker. I push back the ' nail skin carefully, and make charming : little half-moons. Twice a day is not | too often for this treatment, and once i after you have used the cuticle cream at night. And then, of course, we all have our own ideas whether or not we * shall use nail-white. Many nails are quite transparent. For these, I suggest tho nail-white. But those who are fortunate enough to own heavy porcelain-like nails need not be worried about artificial whitening. Next, and finally, is the polish. Personally. I prefer a polish to blend with my costumes. If 1 wear a white dress i and white accessories, 1 like a rather , bright pink polish—but not too bright. If red is my shade for the day or evening, I prefer a blending of red polish. For various other bright shades, like blue, orange, and green, I like a rather subdued polish—just a natural one acquired by use of the buffer. This method of gaining as valuable an asset as beautiful hands may seem almost too simple to be true, but the secret of ; it all is to give your hands regular and thorough attention, and you will soon be rewarded in full for your efforts.
