TELEGRAPHIC CHESS MATCH

OTAGO VERSUS CANTERBURY. The first of the series of the interprovincial telegraph chess matches was commenced on Saturday evening between the Canterbury and Otago Chess Clubs. Each match requires two evenings to complete the games and the games unfinished will be sent to an Adjudication Committee in Wellington for decision. A similar match to that between Otago and Canterbury took place on Saturday evening between the Auckland and Wellington Clubs, and the winners of these two matches will play off later on for the'club championship of the Dominion. Last year Otago was successful in winning this coveted honour. Twenty boards are engaged in the match, and most of the games are in their twentieth moves. Some interesting finishes are assured, as the Otago team is keen to retain the championship trophy. The following are the names of the respective players, with their board numbers and the club for which they are playing:— OTAGO. CANTERBURY. 1. Dunlop, J. B. Kennedy, H. 2. Pihl, D. Darwin J. L. J! The following few remarks on the progress of the games will bo of interest: — Board 3. —A win has been registered in favour of Otago. Boards 5, 13, and 17.—The Otago players have each a pawn up, with a good attacking position. Board 18. —The Otago player has two pawns up, and if lie maintains this advantage the prospects for a win are very rosy. Board 15. —The Canterbury player has a very strong attack on his Otago opponent. although Otago has a pawn up.

The balance of the 14 boards are even material, and as the final result depends upon these, it is hard to foretell which club will win this match.
