AUSTRALIANS PLAY WELL,

LONDON, June 10. (Received June 11, at 6.30 p.m.) At the Queen’s Club court, which is well grassed, the weather was gloomy. Crawford, with masterly ease, called a tune to which Kirby almost throughout vigorously but vainly, danced. There were glimpses of the form whereby Crawford defeated Cochet, but Kirby scarcely extended the Australian, whose service has vastly improved. He was guilty of only one double fault in the three sets. He rarely left the baseline, and was impervious to Kirby’s onslaught. Crawford’s delicate chops and severe passing drives were delightful. M'Grath had a harder task against Robbins, the champion of South Africa, •who is a powerful, reliable baseline player. He hits hard on both wings," and is the personification of steadiness. He forced M'Grath to fight all the way. The feature of the third set was an endeavour by Robbins to break down M'Grath’s backhand. In one rally he hit five successive drives down M'Grath’s backhand. Later he hit five successive drives admirably into the backhand corner, each of which was returned, and the last one with such interest that Robbins was left standing. M'Grath’s service in the fourth set provided the day’s brightest tennis, Robbins converting a deficit of 3 —5 into a 6 —5 lead. The match swayed excitingly, M’Grath neatly exploiting the chops and bringing Robbins reluctantly to the net, but the Australian was often beaten when he endevoured to advance on his own drives.
