MINING 1 GOLDEN CENTRAL EXPLORATION, LTD. The Golden Central Exploration, Ltd., reports that it has secured a lease of great promise (the St. Paul’s mine near Charters Towers, Queensland), and is now securing three other leases in the rich goldfields of Central Otago, New Zealand (says Commercial Australia of May 31). Mr F. Yelverton Wilson, a director of this company, has .iust returned from New Zealand, where he arranged to secure for the company three areas between Matakanui and St. Bathaus, Central Otago, New Zealand. These areas will be approximately 1000, 500, and 300 acres respectively. These leases were secured from the New Zealand Government, which has given all possible assistance to the company. Dr Marsden, director of scientific research, and Mr MucPhersou, assistant Government geologist, have been temporarily released by the New Zealand Government and retained by the company to take charge of the operations being carried out. Over SO.OOOoz have been taken out of the Matakanui field, and that is only skimming the surface. The whole area secured by the company consists in tlie main of old river beds where Mr MacPherson has proved many rich deposits to be, on his geophysical surveys. A bore will be sunk to a depth of about 300 ft and this work will bo in progress shortly. BLACKWATBR MINES, LTD, The Blackwater Mines’ return for May is as follows: Crushed 4100 tons yielding 1932 fine ounces of gold from all sources, the value of which (taking gold at 115 s per fine ounce) was £11,117. Working costs were £5798, leaving an estimated working profit for the month of £5310. Development expenditure for the month was £764 and capital expenditure £l2ll. Review of development work carried out during May; No. 10 Level-North drive was advanced 30 feet on reef of average value of 12Jdwt over width of 12 inches. We have now reached a point on this level when we should meet with the better reef (Prohibition Block), shown in upper levels. No. 11 Level.—North drive was advanced 15 feet on reef of average value of 12£dwt over width of 14. inches. Battery Crosscut, North Drive. —The progress was 32 feet. Good reef track was still showing in the face. No. 12 Level, North Drive.—Work on this level was confined to rising for connection and taking of leading stopes. Both width and values in the rise were good and consistent with those on the level. No. 8 Crosscut to Prohibition Shaft.— The progress here was 36>) feet. Shaft Sinking (Prohibition). —Progress was 63 feet. The shaft is now completed to No. 8 level, the chamber sets stood, and work of cutting the plat commenced. MERCHANDISE MARKET Merchants continue to receive advice of advances in the prices of British and Eastern lines. These lines include Sicily, Jordan, and ground almonds, tartaric acid, sardines, bulk cornflour, sago, tapioca, pineapples, coconut, etc. The Ceylon and Indian tea markets continue firm so far as the lower grades are concerned. Higher grade teas are, if anything, easier. The Californian market for prunes and seedless raisin a continues finii* notwithstanding the change in the dollar value. Some merchants have not yet received their Mildura currants. The Kartigi, from Adelaide, Melbourne, and Hobart, is due here on the 16th, and she will bring supplies, shipped at Adelaide. Australian rice has advanced considerably in price. A shipment of Siam rice in half-cwt bags was landed ex the Waikouaiti, transhipped at Sydney. This vessel also brought shelled walnuts and Australian prunes. Guinea Gold cigarettes will be available on the market in 50’s from about June 16. Yellow Bird cigarette tobacco, loz packets, is now off the market. Milkeeze has been reduced in price. Roma tea has been reduced in price. The Northumberland brought supplies of ground almonds, carbonate of soda, Brazil nuts, and Camp coffee. Advice from an exporting- firm in the Straits Settlements states that owing to the unprofitable prices which have been ruling for pineapples, growers h.We unanimously decided to destroy 50 per cent, of their crops. This, decision, which is now being put into operation, hae, of course, resulted in canners putting up their prices. _ Several exporters have considered it advisable to purchase for stock, as the factors appear to be rather "bullish.” First, we have the Chinese bank willing to finance canners, and now the decision among all growers to pick only half their crops. The deciding factor, however, in influencing values will be demand, and up to the present 'we cannot report any marked activity on the part of buyers in Europe. The latest development is the appearance of a new cauner in the market who is underselling the others, and as a result of this competition prices here have- actually declined. UNITED STATES FLOUR. A shipment of 115 tons of United States flour hag been brought to the local market by the City of Tokio. FRUIT AND PRODUCE WORLD Reilly’s report selling:— Per Dozen.—Violets 2s 6d, 3s 6d.
