VISIT OF HOME SECRETARY The Rev. William Nelson Bitton, home secretary of the London Missionary Society, will arrive in Dunedin by this afternoon’s train after visiting Australia aud Samoa in connection with the work of that society, in the interest of which he will tour New Zealand. He will speak at a public meeting in the Moray Place Congregational Church Hall this evening, and will occupy the pulpits of Congregational Churches to-morrow, the evening service at Moray Place Church being broadcast from 4YA. ■ The coming of .Mr Bitton to this city will enable its citizens to hear a man of widq thought end experience due largely to his important association with the society he represents. of great interest and has been reported in the Australian press as having brought a new point of view to many topics of interest and importance, associated with the world of to-day. His presence and addresses at the recent centenary meetings of Congregationalism, held in Sydney, gave great incentive to wider thinking and seeing and stimulated every audience. Before taking up the position of home secretary in London in 1914, Mr Bitton was in China, where, amongst other activities, ho was associate-editor of the Chinese Recorded. Mr Bitton has also written several books contributing much valuable help to students and readers of Chinese problems, In religious matters be is a man of broadest conceptions and deepest convictions, always blending the call c£ the mission field with the need of more intense churchmanship at the home base. Undoubtedly his wide outlook was the reason why he was chosen to represent the London Missionary Society’s China missionaries at the great World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh in 1910, where a deep tad true understanding of world matters vas demanded from all who attended. His powerful personality will undoubtedly make a great impact upon his audiences, which will also benefit from listening to a man of incisive mind, deep knowledge and wide experience.
