TO-DAY’S FOOTBALL

ASSOCIATION REPRESENTATIVE MATCH. If last season's interprovincial games played at Dunedin for the English Football Association Trophy ate any criterion, the challenge match between Wellington and Otago, at the Caledonian Ground this afternoon, should provide a fine exhibition of Association football. These matches are, regarded a& the blue ribbon of the game in the Dominion, and the winners of to-day’s game are likely to receive challenges from Canterbury and Auckland in due course. The Otago players are very keen on holding the trophy, while Wellington are equally anxious to go one better than a draw, which was the result of last year’s match. The playing area, despite the recent rain,? is in excellent order for fast play. The Wellington players, under the managership of Mr George Aers, arrived by the first express last night, and are quartered, at the Rugby Hotel. The teams for to-day are:— Wellington.—P. M'Vean; W. Miles, S. Haines; Hindle, J. Campbell (captain), Todd; R. M‘Leod, E. Jeffery, R. James, W. Cunningham, D. Craig; reserve, Geddes. Otago.—J. M'Dougall; S. Taylor, L. Coats (captain); S. Duncan, J. Porter, A. Stennouse; J. Witchall, T. M'Cormack, W. Hooper, R. M’Lean, C., Skinner. Provided that the weather remains fine a curtain-raiser will be played between Cavershara and High School Old Boys, two unbeaten teams in the third division competition, and with the Military Band of the First ' Battalion in attendance the public should be well catered for during the afternoon.

RUGBY. The Taieri Rugby football team will be seen in action on Carisbrook for the first time this season, when it meets Southern, the - unbeaten leaders in the senior competition, this afternoon. The country side, which has shown a decided improvement in its play this season, will be at its strongest. The forwards, among whom Slyfield is outstanding, are weighty and energetic, . and may prove a match for the smaller Southern pack. The backs, if not brilliant, are sound and play _ with determination. The Southern side has not had its line crossed this season. As a curtain-raiser the Fourth Grade match Zingari A v. Taieri will be played. On the University Oval University A will meet Zingari, and at Tahuna Park the match between Alhambra and Union will be played. At Bishopscourt hill residents should be provided with some»bright play in the match between Kaikorai and University B. On the main ground at Logan Park Dunedin, an improving side, will meet Pirates, who have been defeated only once. RUGBY LEAGUE. The following Rugby League matches will be played at the Oval:—Athletic v. Pacific, at 1,30; City v. Christian Brothers, at 2.45.
